"Don't DIY Alone!" A radical DIY-o-rama here in Edinburgh!

Hello all!

Plans are in motion to organise a city-wide DIY-o-rama here in Edinburgh, set for February 5th - 8th! It is to be a weekend of workshops, skillshares, gatherings, discussion, action and fun around the theme of DIY and direct action!

I was wondering what people would feel about using the Forest cafe as one of the main base points of the weekend? This would involve use of the cafe during days and evenings, using the spaces upstairs and down for workshops and discussions and hosting entertainments and shows, as well as providing a welcome space for people coming to Edinburgh from elsewhere, or just wanting to find out about the weekend?

I was directed onto the BB to ask this? I'd like it if people could let me know their feelings!

ps. Yes, please bring Ikea cabinets. That's what DIY is ALL about, flat pack cabinets. Nothing more, nothing less. Just flat.

Not sure if the action group is functioning but maybe run it past them? Also, it seems like it might be a good project for one or some of the EVS peoples to get involved with?

Yes Shannon what a good idea! I think EVS people need to get involved with this kind of project! I don’t know a lot of things about DIY culture and the direct action (I guess because this movement comes from UK) but if I choose to come here it’s exactly to understand a new culture. This movement seems really interesting for me and I will be very happy to have more explanation about this and to help this people to organize a weekend of workshops, skill shares, gatherings, discussion…etc…

Come past the Action Working Group meetings
or PM me and arrange to meet me in the cafe sometime and I will tell you all about the possibilities The Forest has. (mon, thu or sat are my usual days there)

Thank you for replying saying you'd like to take part! The nature of the event makes it hard to really come up with affirmative action plans, but maybe we could call a little brief meeting to discuss how you all could help and generally what the idea is. I'm busy this week, but maybe next? x
