Sunday 3rd May

Black Oil Brothers
Before the blues found its way to Chicago and redefined itself with electric guitars and drummers, bluesmen were minstrels playing juke joints in the Mississippi Delta armed only with their guitars and voices while the crowd kept the rhythm by stomping their feet in time. Born and raised in Chicago, The Black Oil Brothers aim to channel that kind of boot stompin' blues that doesn’t need a backline or distortion pedals to make it cook. Resonators played with steel slides, wailing harmonicas, 3 part harmonies and the righteous twang of acoustic guitars and mandolin strings define their music.

Au

and Jesus H.Foxx
Au (pronounced "ay-you") is the work of multi-instrumentalist Luke Wyland. Begun while finishing up his degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, then moved across the US to find to its roots in the thriving community of Portland, OR.

Currently a full time duo with Dana Valatka on drums (Jackie-O-Motherfucker, Mustaphamond), it is a loosely defined amalgam of players that can swell to double digit numbers with full choir in tow and sees some of Portland's finest lending a helping hand. It's sound is vast and deftly treads a narrow bridge between the loose-associations of the backwoods freak-folk crowd and the more formalized concoctions of art-poppers like Brian Eno; managing to erase the high art/low art boundary between American contemporary classical music and American pop music.

They have been compared to : Arcade Fire, Soft Machine, Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Arvo Part, George Gershwin, Charles Ives, Parenthetical Girls
Jesus H. Foxx have just released their new EP, “Matter”, a great departure - and a great leap - from last year's short, sharp "Tightt Ideas" single. New material showcases a wider range of influences, from Deerhunter to Fennesz via The Microphones, whilst retaining echoes of Pavement and Talking Heads.

Formed in the summer of 2007, a summer quite unlike those you'd dream of as a kid, as a 4-peice garage rock band channelling "The Modern Lovers’ apathetic composure with the rhythmic deviancy of Pavement"(drownedinsound.com). They have slowly but steadily expanded arms and legs, until each now number 14, and moved towards a grander sound with the addition of glockenspiels, cornets, several drummers and Grizzly Bear-esque harmonies.

Benni Hemm Hemm and Withered Hand

Benni Hemm Hemm's keen ear for melody and soothing tones hide complex songs structures and intricate rhythm patterns. In his native Iceland he performs with an ensemble brass band, and in the past has had collaborations with a chamber orchestra, and also with Jens Lakeman. This will see him in rare solo mode - but with his extensive back-catalogue of material to draw from (matched only by his incredible array of jumpers) - it should be something rather special.

http://www.myspace.com/bennihemmhemm
Withered Hand is Dan Willson, sometime comic artist and founder member of the sadly defunct Peanut and one time member of the not defunct The Love Gestures, and incorporates, at different times, Neil Pennycook, Hannah Shepherd, Chris Bryant and Alun Thomas.

A Withered Hand show is a balancing act — Dan Willson, more comfortable scribbling in his sketchbooks than standing in front of a packed room behind a microphone, wraps his deepest, darkest experiences in the prettiest folk-pop melodies this side of Herman Dune. At times, it’s almost too much for him to bear — a song cuts out midway through, a quick mumbled apology, and the show’s over.

That’s the thing about the best in pop. Losing hurts. Yearning kills. You might be singing the prettiest of notes and la-la-la’s, but inside that harmonious gold wrapper is the dirtiest of emotions.

He has released five albums in twenty years, each one receiving rave reviews from everywhere from Billboard to Mojo to the NY Times.
