Does anyone have the time or expertise to promote this play?

Hey everyone

I received this e-mail from David Levyarts:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are interested in bringing Howard Zinn's MARX IN SOHO to the Forest. I have included some information below. I hope it helps. We are looking for dates between July 18th 2009 and July 20th. A person told me they felt it would be a perfect fit there.
Let me know your thoughts,

David

Here is a little information about Howard Zinn's play MARX IN SOHO and our work touring it.

For nearly 4 years, we have been touring Howard Zinn's, one man show, MARX IN SOHO and this summer we have plans to bring it to Europe . We are in search of people, organizations, community/performance spaces, or theaters interested in collaborating with us. We have been fortunate, during our travels, to support socially conscious initiatives locally and globally. We have had great success using the play to help organizations raise money and stimulate community involvement to aid them in achieving their goals.

ImageHoward Zinn's is most known for his book, A People's History, offering an alternative and enlightening perspective of American history as well as a great model for examining history in general. Howard Zinn’s play, “Marx in Soho” portrays the return of Marx.

How you might ask? Imagine all Karl Marx would have to say after one hundred years of just being able to watch... Embedded in some secular afterlife where intellectuals, artists, and radicals are sent, Marx is given permission by those in charge to return to Soho London to have his say. But through a bureaucratic mix–up, he winds up in SOHO in New York. Marx returns to clear his name but in doing so he gives the audience glimpses of Karl Marx seldom talked about; Marx the immigrant, Marx the father, Marx the husband, Marx the Man. With captivating wit he shares tales from his life with his wife, daughters, friends and enemies.

The play can stand on its own or it can be used as a tool for dialogue. We like using it not just as an introduction to Karl Marx's ideas but as an introduction to both classical and contemporary sociological thought. We find it offers something for everyone. For one who is familiar with Marxist thought, it offers a glimpse of who Marx might have been. For someone who knows little of Marx it offers a great introduction. Howard Zinn has crafted a play that not only introduces an audience to the ideas of Marx in a non- confrontational manner, but also inspires an audience to be open to thinking about their community and society from the perspective of these (and other) social theories.

Jerry Levy, who plays Karl Marx in the play, comes to the stage with years of experience as an actor and director in addition to being a professor of sociology at Marlboro College in Vermont http://www.marlboro.edu/academics/faculty/levy_jerry/ Often times the audience finds the discussions after the performance as rewarding as the actual play itself. As Jerry Levy is also a professor, he is often asked to lead a discussion after the performance helping connect the themes in the play, to current events etc. If this is something you are interested in please let us know.

How large is this production? What kind of space will we need? Check out the booking section of our website and you will see that this one-man show is extremely flexible and lends itself to venues both big and small www.levyarts.com

If you're interested at all in holding a benefit performance for your organization, or have some ideas who we might want to contact please let me know. While right now we are looking to book the performance as a benefit for socially conscious causes, we welcome any other ideas you might have. We are empowered to do benefits by our other “paying” venues. So, if you have a lead on an arts center or theater who we should contact about booking us outright please let us know. If you are not the right person, but know someone or an organization that might be interested, please let me know or just send this message along to them.

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.
