CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
Youth Exchange - Action 1 – Youth Program
PEKARNA’S COMUNITY GARDEN “GREEN REFIT”
PROJECT CONCEPT
................................................................................\
....................................................................
1 :: CONTEXT AND MOTIVATION
Pekarna is a cultural space originally squatted in
1993, located in Maribor, Slovenia (nice
medium sized town, 100 000 inhabitants, surrounded by
green hills and crossed by Drava
River). It was a military bakery from Yugoslav Army
that after Slovenia’s independence left and
abandoned these magnificent facilities. A group of
young people decided then to use the space
for cultural events due to the lack of spaces in
number and diversity in the area. The process
was slow but after 13 years Pekarna is a reference for
a great number of young people in
Maribor concerning independent culture/sub-culture
events and its promotion and production.
Pekarna is self-organised and several different
groups, clubs, and individuals, work, develop
projects or even live in it.
Pekarna’s buildings are quite old and some are not in
very good condition, but they are usable
and have very big potential for restoration and
improvement.
Inside the complex exists a green area that plays a
major role on the organisation and structure
of the space and place. Nowadays this area is quite
neglected and its not very clear who will
take responsibility for its maintenance and
improvement but, in fact, this discussion has just
started among Pekarna’s groups and for the future
there should be a group of people more
connected to this role.
To promote and support the connection of Pekarna’s
people to the referred green area comes
the idea of redesigning and refitting this space to an
extent that aims to make it more useful,
sustainable and appealing/enjoyable. The refitting
process will be based on artistic intervention
in strait connection with the natural environment,
namely through the use of Permaculture
principles.
If successful, this refitting process will create an
extreme added value to the complex with the
potential of bringing more people to the place mainly
those who, by nature, are not motivated
to do so. It will create a dynamic of new events,
projects and leisure in that area.
