catch

Postby Fils d'Abeille » Sun Jun 10, 2007 5:14 pm

It has become clear to me in a vision that the forest must begin regular volunteer baseball events in the meadows. For this it has been foretold that the forest will fund the purchase of one or two bats, a few gloves and a couple of balls.

It also strikes me that it would be cheaper and good fun to descriminate against left handed people by only buying gloves for the left hand.

I hope nobody is tempted to mess with the inevitable.

Duncan is evidently self mutilating while Swithun's is still sparkley out of the box! Hard to say who's winning. I like baseball... gloves are important because without them you forget whether you're supposed to catch the ball or run the other direction. Let's chew up the bowls green and aim at quartermile.

Seriously - we have quite a few lefties. Off the top of my head: Dan, Duncan and I. There should be at least one glove for the lefties.

okeydokes, let's talk numbers... I don't know how to play properly.
We need enough gloves for one team (plus 1 or two for good measure) and a couple for the leftie whinge bags.

Do we want two, or just the one bat?

Do we look out for good shopping? Or shall I just scout out the prices at John Lewis. Heck I'll reconoitre anywho and report back.

This my friends... is the time for ideas. There is no reason we can't schedule the first game for saturday. HAHA... turd... funny.

what if we just punch the balls out the air instead of gloves?

A proper team consists of at least nine people (pitcher, back catch, 1st/2nd/3rd base, short stop, left/centre/right field). I doubt we're looking for this??

perverting the tried and tested rules of baseball is only one step away of being reduced to kick ball.

ROUNDERS is the true game of champions...

tennis ball, is preffered... we can make an excellent bat out of a table leg..
Maybe it could work? But it will be a kaleidoscopic blend of mysterious shadows and rainbow hued-dreams seen through compassionate tears.

Rounders is probably better. It is cheaper, simpler, requires fewer people and is more flexible. Baseball is maybe only worth playing if you are at a certain level. If we are all crap, then being run out most of the time and no prospect of a home run, then it will be less fun. Rounders is enjoyable even if some of us are no good.

That said, it is more ambidextrous. Hmm.

softball is a good game, similar to baseball but a bit lighter. gloves are not needed for all positions maybe... maybe some people will invest in their own gloves?

I wish this conversation was a week ago. My mom could've brought my glove over!

How does rounders work?

I was looking forward to tossing a ball around - need a glove for a good game of catch.

Is baseball equipment easy to get your hands on here? You can get a used bat cheap in the homeland, but it's a more common game...

looks lovely... buy buy buy...

we discussed this at meeting tonight. We reckoned that any more than 12 pounds was too much for a bat.

so anything up to that can be exchanged for forest dollars. wahay...

It is also felt that bat can be used from anything from rounders to baseball. So with that and a tennis ball, we already have hours of fun.

Tennis balls are good. A softball as an optional extra (when we smash a car's window, let's say) maybe?

Why not a regular baseball? Tennisballs fly so high they go into orbit and leave you with a dislocated shoulder, and softballs are ginormous, not very soft at all, and have to be thrown underarm at an arc that makes it impossible to hit.

It'll be about a year or two before I'm due another head wound. I fear baseballs may increase the chances of this being sooner rather than later.

One bat on its way. Cost was 11 quid, but about another fiver for postage. Seems very reasonable to me, and anyway I've paid.

Did the baseball / softball equipment aquisition risk assessment preparatory meeting come to any preliminary conclusions about gloves by any chance ?

Perhaps we can buy a helmet for Alex just so he looks funny ?

Softballs do not have to be thrown under arm (though that's how the official rules go). Also, bigger ball means easier to hit. Tennis balls will go really, really far when whacked. Maybe too far...

It turns out that willow bat's what you use if you weigh 250lb. Babe Ruth was 215lb.

Maybe half of us could buy gloves for ourselves and share them around as they ought to be taken care of, being cut off the backs of animals. Here's a few for small right hands from an Edinburgh seller:

Bat has arrived ! It's very pretty, and please ignore Daniel's weight nonsense. The bat is just under 2 lbs which is just the same as the lighter bats that the pros use nowadays, in the age of fast pitching.

hum... we have bat... and have ground to a halt.

At least one person said they already had a glove. Is this true of anyone else? I'm currently watching a few items on ebay. A couple of these are right hand gloves (for you lefties).

I'm not too sure what I need to be looking out for in terms of size etc. I know there's the leather issue, but they're second hand so that's something right?

In any case, these seem pretty cheap. Might be nice to get ahold of two/three gloves. Any thoughts?

Here are some examples:

Just won a right hand glove for left handed players for a fiver. Some progress is being made. Someday we will have a game... of something. Do not lose hope. My next target has a ball involved. Wahay.

So, after all the fuss we've so far got two right hand (for a left hander) gloves.

Oh the humanity.

Perhaps if we could agree that the Forest will spend say 50 quid on this we could get more gloves.

Wish Matt was still here, he was a softball player. Played with one of the teams in Edinburgh iirc.
