The Forest In Fife on a Fike! (Bike)

Postby James » Mon Jun 11, 2007 12:00 pm

So I have a vague plan ... early one Saturday morning, a group of us catch the train to Dundee and spend two days cycling the costal route down into Edinburgh. We find some random wood to camp in on the Saturday night and (some of us) enjoy fish and chips from Pittenweem which is apparently even better than the famous ones from Anstruther ... Would anyone be interested?

I would relish this! But on the condition that we take it slow (max 50 mi/day) for this poor cripple. How far is the coastal route?

I think the costal route is 70/80 miles but I will check that properly soon and report back....

I too am one for coastal routes, as well as other routes. My tire exploded... It has a big rip in it. Apparently it will cost me 20 quid to replace the bastard.
Anyway, I'm a hopefully attending.

I think including crossing the Tay and Forth it may approach 100mi. Could we stretch it to three days and visit the Isle of May?

Cycle Route 1 - Dundee, Tayport, Tensmuir Forest, Leuchars, Guardbridge, St. Andrews - 18 miles
A917 - St. Andrews, Crail, Anstruther (Isle of May!), Pittenweem, St. Monans, Elie, Lower Largo - 25 Miles
A915 - Lower Largo, Leven - 3 Miles
A955 - Leven, Methhill, Buckhaven, East Wemyss, Coaltown of Wemyss, Dysart, pathhead, Kirkcaldy - 11 Miles
Cycle Route 1 - Kirkcaldy, Edinburgh - 22.5 miles

Total: 80 Miles!

Slightly wary about following the main roads round the East Nuek of fife, they can be busy .. but I think it will still be nice to see the route.

It's also described as a walking route. How would a racer/road bike fare?

James, just wondering where you're getting those distances from ?

May well be right, but I've cycled some of those bits before and my spidey sense says they're a bit optimistic.

Which bit is described as a walking route? They're all cycle paths or A roads. There is a fife coastal path which is a walking route, I've done some of it and parts of it would be very hard on a bike, which is why I'm avoiding it.

The A route distances come from Google maps, the 1st cycle route distance comes from a pdf of a leaflet from the cycle route people*, and google maps the 2nd one came from fife cycle network site** and a guardian article***. This one i'm slightly unsure about because of the crappy way they have split the route into stages, but if its of it should only be by a couple of miles.
