Forest in the List
Forest in the List
The Forest is in the List again. Usually they object to having to tidy up after oneself. This year it is the 'watetry' salsa. Did you forget the gelatin again, Alex?

Re: Forest in the List
Here's the review from the List guide for 2009. Just got round to reading it...
Seems like an improvement on last year's 'watery salsa' controversy.
Next year - the first Michelin Star??

A charitable, not-for-profit arts base, the Forest is all things to all people. To many it’s a venue to hear local music of all varieties and genres, or a place for some legendary late-night festival parties. To others it’s a daytime home from home offering craft classes and art exhibitions, while an unenlightened few might even suggest it’s some kind of 'bloody hippy' commune. Whatever it is, though, its café business is both focal point and money maker. Amongst simple surroundings, which have been elaborately decorated with murals and sculpture, a selection of exclusively vegetarian meals are prepared and served by keen volunteers. Many of the specials have gathered an enthusiastic following among the regulars, including nachos, burritos, fresh wraps and the daily alternating chickpea curry and chilli. Some of the menu descriptions are an added bonus: why, for example, are the brie and oatcakes referred to as ‘the Pynchon’? And who could argue with the fact that two quid cheese and beans on toast is ‘the Godfather of Soul (Food)’? The flapjacks and brownies, much like the venue itself, are also pretty special.
High point: An affordable and diverse menu in one of Edinburgh’s most unique spaces
Low point: Take your chances that a less dedicated (ie speedy) volunteer isn’t serving you

That time of year again...
This review is taken from the current (2010) edition
A centre for the artistic underground and counterculture of the capital, or an anarcho-hippy commune full of dreadlocks and piercings? Either way, it’s safe to say there’s nowhere else like the Forest, a wonderfully idiosyncratic not-for-profit charitable organisation run by volunteers which provides hearty if unspectacular vegetarian fare at knock-down prices to keep the creative juices flowing. Among weird murals and artworks and scuffed second-hand furniture the enthusiastic staff bash out veggie staples like curries, chillis, veggie pot roast, nachos and burritos, or for the particularly thrifty of pocket a gargantuan plate of cheese and beans on toast for £2. For those with a sweeter tooth there’s a decent range of vegan cakes and slices, and the Fairtrade coffee is definitely recommended. A brilliant and unique venue for art exhibitions, book events, gigs, craft classes and much more, the Forest is far from the most swanky café experience you’ll have in the city, but it’s undoubtedly one of the more interesting places you’ll nibble on a vegan flapjack.
High point: An alternative atmosphere all its own
Low point: Service from volunteer staff is forgivably patchy
