there is a plan to get the café mac connected to the network and give it a last.fm profile so people can experience the aural atmosphere of the space (minus chatter, clinking cutlery, mobile phones, pa feedback) in the comfort of their own home/workspace/etc.

i've asked before but can't remember the exact answer, but, what license does the forest have for playing non-copyleft music in the café space? i'm under the impression there's a dj license but what's the exact situation with background stuff from the mac? what kind of musics (legally) should be on there?

the creative commons movement is a fantastic copyleft music resource that needs to be exploited by the forest. here is their audio pages with links to sites with available music on the right.

recordings of gigs/events in the forest; what's the copyright legality of us playing these back in the café? is a 'word of mouth ok' good enough or should we get people who are recorded to sign, say, a CC waver for the recording? archive.org would be able to host recordings which would give both the forest and the respective artists publicity (and save on our bandwidth costs). playback in the café would also promote the artists through last.fm (i know there are plans for forest music to get a presence on last.fm which would allow people to listen to forest music roster artists).

thoughts?

not all of the music in the cafe is copy left / non copy right. we have explict permission by the artist of all tracks to play the music we play. not sure how that translates to online but i reckon we would be okay with most of them.

all of it? do we require any receipt of that permission? in relation to online (either playing forest gigs via the website or uploading them to last.fm), that would depend on exactly what permission was given (or what license the gig recording is released by the artist under ;). IANAL (there's another one for you ryan) but i'm wondering specifically what the law requires given stuff like this has happened recently (and locally).

although that news link would more relate to some of the musics volunteers might have been known to bring in to play in the café at points the past.

though still, it's a matter of respecting [explicitly] what the artists say we can do with their work.
