moving a 'puter upstairs?

Post by beev » Mon May 21, 2007 8:23 pm

The new ubuntu computer in the office is very handy. But would it be better to have it up in the cafe, behind the decks?

It would be fast and easily accessible net access for vollies and KMs. The homepage could be the bb to encourage greater engagement.

It would allow quicker/better comms between KMs and Emily/others, via the bb.

It could also herald the start of the digital era for events booking and vollies signing up for shifts.

Could we try it out?

no.

the point is, to have two work computers in the office...
Maybe it could work? But it will be a kaleidoscopic blend of mysterious shadows and rainbow hued-dreams seen through compassionate tears.

I've hardly ever seen the two in use at the same time. If anything, it's usually someone wanting to use the printer while someone else is on the original computer, which means the new one has to be switched on and then the person using the old one has to transfer what they're doing to the new one which is a fuss and just wastes everybody's time.

I understand the idea of having an extra one to work on in the office, but I haven't seen the actual benefit of it in practice, and I don't see what could be done on it downstairs that can't be done upstairs.

We also have a perfectly good laptop with ubuntu sitting in the cabinet, waiting indefinitely for forest records to be ready. Could be used either in the office or behind the decks. Would need securing. It's currently setup so that it can't do anything except play the music that it doesn't yet have, but I could quickly turn it into a normal Ubuntu setup.
I've had it with you. If I had an image of a laser gun I would absolutely position it right here in my hand...
Ha! I have a real laser absolutely positioned in my hand!

That sounds perfect, Sean. Could you set it up for internet initially, and hopefully the music box thing will follow on from that?

today both computers were used. i think it IS handy. But yes, something nearer the kitchen could give us a chance to get new vollies on the bb quick and easy and would increase our COMM.

nice

I'll do it this week sometime. It's easy, there is one music user right now that logs in automatically, I just gotta login as admin and setup an Internet user and set that one to login automatically instead. Switching back to music would just be switching users.

Ok, I'll try to formulate a plan. Where is it just now?
