New wireless router

Post by Martin » Sun Aug 17, 2008 4:35 pm

I've replaced the flaky D-Link wireless router with the Linksys WRT54GL we bought some time ago.

Ultimately this little box can replace the PC above the kitchen completely, but doing things one thing at a time to reduce the chances of breaking stuff.

For the geeks: it's running OpenWRT White Russian and X-Wrt.

i love white russians.
Maybe it could work? But it will be a kaleidoscopic blend of mysterious shadows and rainbow hued-dreams seen through compassionate tears.

Right, I was procrastinating this evening so I finished the job.

The beige box of doom is gone.

It's in the action room if anyone wants a pretty reliable ancient PC.

Sweet. Even when you procrastinate, you get things done, Martin.

So one of the problems we had making oak the server was lack of space for HD's. Can we use this computer, or at least it's case as a server?

Actually, better keep it intact for now in case there are problems with the new setup.

Last night things seemed a bit flaky but as far as I could tell the problems were at BT's end.

I'm going to come check on things today.

Nice one, Martin! Does the router have linux on it then? Is it running the traffic shaping script? Can we SSH to it? We've been talking about doing this for what, two years? Three? And I think it was Martin who setup the previous server way back too.
I've had it with you. If I had an image of a laser gun I would absolutely position it right here in my hand...
Ha! I have a real laser absolutely positioned in my hand!

Yep, it's Linux with traffic shaping and SSH and a nice web interface too. You can log into it with the same root password as the old PC.
