it does seem bad recently. It was off a whole evening a while back and this is not rare

Martin, I can probably donate a ZyXEL p660HW-t1 802.1g wireless router in 2 weeks. would this be any help?

OK.

What I changed was to make the ADSL modem into straight PPPoA - PPPoE bridge again, so that all the clever stuff is done on the WRT54G router. Before, it was sometimes getting into the situation where the modem lost the connection, the router lost its DHCP lease and then didn't get a new one for some reason.
