Latest email send to 7" pressers
Hi Keith,
sorry about the delay in getting back to you, Forest Records has been on tour... But we're ready to send you tracks and info now, but I have one question - we use creative commons licensing (http://creativecommons.org/) rather than MCPS
will this be a problem?
Also - what address should we send tracks to you at?
Many thanks,
Dan Gorman, Forest Records
Hi Dan,
Max time = 7mins @ 33 1/3.
No probs on scribing on the run out.
Cheers

Our big brother's got no heart,
when I get my chance I'm going to punch him in the nose, in the nose, in the nose
when I get my chance I'm going to punch him in the nose, in the nose, in the nose
Right then some changes...
Firstly: Me and Gazza just added up the track times ( well Gazza did it really I just watched) and they clock in at....
Side 1 - 7 mins 16 seconds!!!
Side 2 - 6 mins 48 secs!!!
can anyone spot the problem? You may refer to previous notes...
So we spoke to Mikey. He is up for Un-me going 2nd on the side and therefore ending in a locked groove of the final orchestral bit of the track.
Sound ok?
I got a confusing email from pressing plant which i am forwarding after thes...

Hi Dan ,
No worries.
Creative Commons v MCPS shouldn’t be prob. They must be linked somewhere to ensure the correct person gets their royalities.
Also, they must know about clearing your Catalogue Number. All manufacturing is done by Catalogue Number ONLY and therefore I have to assume also Royalty payments. If someone else has your Catalogue Number and we hold the metalwork in stock, you could end up with someone else’s product.
I warn everyone about this.
Send your Studio Master + Full and precise order details to me at
VINYL FACTORY PRODUCTIONS LTD.

So does this mean I need to contact MCPS? or just hope and pray no-one else has FORREC001 (is this the catalogue number?)
and anyone got any good mastering ideas? I have a contact in Ireland if not... but his name would need to go on the cover somewhere....

he might mean the forest mcps/ppl - catalogue number, which is used to make ISRC codes for tracks.
with the the very "label" we got assigned one. was very easy, i just had to join ppl as a label (cost free) and then send off a one-A4 form requesting a catalogue number. they then give you something like this:
GBMTJxxyyyy
GB=Great Britain
MTJ=unique label code (The Very)
yy=you then fill in with the year (e.g. 07)
xxxx=and song catalogue number. (e.g. 0001 to 0004)
e.g.
GBTXO070001 for unme, etc.
these numbers for tracks are called ISRC codes.
go here:
http://www.ppluk.com -> record companies -> join as a member
? maybe of no help cos of creative commons, but there you go.

Ok Very important news:
Read this:
Hi Dan, thanks for your call.
I have attached a price list for you to check out.
Just to summarise what we spoke about on the phone, reasons why I think
a 7"
might not work out for you on this project -
1. Its gonna be very quiet. Grooves move from left to right on the
record,
and the louder the cut is the more land the grooves need to take up to
modulate left to right without crashing into each other (causing
jumps). So
when we only have a small amount of land to play with we have to cut
quieter
to fit it on. This will make it pretty much too quiet for DJs to play
out,
and also the noise floor comes into play - on a 7 minute 7" the noise
floor
is going to be probably about as loud as the music.
2. The closer you move to the centre hole on a record the worse the
sound
quality gets. This is called inner groove distortion (where by high
frequency is lost the closer to the centre you get) and tracing
distortion
(whereby the tracking arm when playing back a record "reads" the
grooves
less accurately the closer you get to the centre of a record). You can
check
this on any record you own - find one with just one track on the whole
side
then play the outside edge and then skip straight to the inside edge
and you
will hear a loss of high frequency and clarity when you move to the
centre
of the record. So you can see why a 7" is going to have worse sound
quality
than most of a 12" disc, because it is so much closer to the centre
hole.
In terms of loudness on this project I would say that I could cut a 10"
probably 6dB louder than a 7", with both at 33rpm. Also the majority of
the
music on the 10" would be further out from the centre hole than the 7"
and
so would be better sound quality.
I could cut a 12" that is 7 minutes long between 2 and 4 dB louder than
the
10", and again we would have fractionally better sound quality.
Both the 10" and 12" would be perfect for playing out.
The other option you have is doing 2 x 7" with 1 track on each side,
but
obviously then you are looking at more money again!
Hope all this helps, give me a shout with any queries. Holler at Mikey
for
me, and tell him to send me a copy of his record!
Cheers

So Basically, he wants us to holler at Mikey! And we discussed it, we (me and him) think a 10" would be best. Is this ok Forest Records? I'll check prices for it. Yers?

its never been done before.. it will be totally out there!.. AND LOUD!
and only people with really big record players will be able to play it!

Maybe it could work? But it will be a kaleidoscopic blend of mysterious shadows and rainbow hued-dreams seen through compassionate tears.

Set up charge = £30.
10” Pressings x 500 @ 50ppu = £250.
White Labels x 500 @ 3p a pair = £15.
White paper sleeves x 500 @ 12ppu = £60.
Delivery = £50.
Total = £675.
Vat = £118.13p.
To Pay = £793.13p.

Keith
Do we want 500? and is 100gm ok?
It will basically work out at around 2 quid a unit all in. Which isn't so bad. I guess if we get them for festival we can shift em...
Yes/no?
I would really like to get this happening before I leave on Tues,,,

Do we want test pressings of the 10"?They would cost about £150 for a set.
Here's the arguments:
Yes - we get to hear how it all sounds before we get 500 of the fuckers.
No - the pressing will be pretty true to the mastered copy, so if we trust the mastering plant there's not much point.
We need to decide this by this afternoon! This is Thursday.
I said no, we don't want them, earlier to the guy, anyone disagree?

So the mastered copy has arrived.
I hold it my hand.
I presume I send it along to
VINYL FACTORY PRODUCTIONS LTD.
...etc
with
quote
'Full and precise order details to me'
I'm thinking Dan has already sorted this, but I'm not definite, anyone know for sure?
I'll give Mikey a ring in the meantime to see if he's any the wise.
Still were one step closer.
