linux computer in action room

Post by ravanwin » Mon Jan 21, 2008 10:05 am

the one on the far left refuses to read my portable hard drive! This hurts.

The one on the right is uber-slow (let's buy RAM)

and my laptop is practically defunct.

Ryan - are you going to be around today? I'll swing by while I'm out shopping and see if I can do anything with your portable drive.

I have spare ram sticks too and there are probably some actually in the action room. I just don't have the time to deal with that room. If anyone has time to boost the ram on the far-right machine please do so.
I've had it with you. If I had an image of a laser gun I would absolutely position it right here in my hand...

That's the kind of flash memory you don't want.

But seriously folks, I couldn't work out what was up with Ryan's external drive. It gets recognised and mounted on his laptop (sometimes) and the right hand computer. But on the left hand computer (and MartinM's laptop), it didn't get recognised properly.

From the logs, a USB device is found when it gets plugged in, but then within the same second, it is like it gets unplugged again. So, there is nothing in /dev to look at, or anything more informative in the logs.

By your comp you mean your laptop right? If it was always working before, and now it keeps appearing and disappearing, and it does this on more than one computer, then I would guess the wire or connector on the hard drive has gone faulty. It seems a reasonable hypothesis, but I'm no hardware faults expert. I've heard that those external hard drives are quite prone to breaking too.

Swith, maybe the edlug list could tell us something?

Yeah - I'll post something. Ryan, do you have a different USB cable you could try with, just to eliminate this from our inquiries?

Do you know what the make/model of your drive is? It's a Sony VAIO something. If anyone on EdLUG can help, they will want to know all the specs.
