We Want The Airwaves!

Post by Jimmy Bastard » Fri Sep 16, 2005 5:40 pm

Is anyone interested in working out a regular radio show from the Forest.
We could rock it in high-style and operate a pirate from the roof-top or just knock out a podcast on a weekly basis.
Stream it and make it available in lo-res and hi-res MP3 downloads.
Alongside showcasing the insane talent that passes through the venue, ain't everyone had an idea for an amazing sixty minutes in Radioland, I mean there's no way I ever see a shortfall in features.

UNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUND
RADIO MOTHERFUCKER
MF - FM
Mofo on the air!
'This sound does not subscribe to the international plan.'
UNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUNDERGROUND

God, I love the Oedipal noun.
All transmitters to pull, all receivers to boost...
Who's in?

9 to 5 and 5 to 9 ain't gonna take it
It's our time we want the world
And we want it now we're gonna take it, anyhow

We want the airwaves We want the airwaves We want
the airwaves, baby if rock is gonna stay alive'

Off-topic aside, could someone with good heart take time out and email me recipes for the salsa and burritos. I'm back in hometown and before heading for Edinburgh again (sometime in the next seven days) , am planning an invite here, amongst the old reliables, please send to boliviadarling@hotmail.com

I've sent the recipes.

As for the radio, I think this has been talked about before.

Anybody?

Terrific idea, Dai. Umm... perhaps FM broadcasting particulars could be discussed elsewhere, although online broadcast would probably be simpler/cheaper(?) and reach a global audience. Are you thinking of something along the lines of http://www.3wk.com , which goes from track to track without any dj commentary whatsoever, or the more traditional banter inclusive format?

i'll do a short show. will be fun.

an internet radio station used to be run from the downstairs IM room, but (like most in that room) i think they didn't pay their bills.

i don't like the idea of a real FM station. to get real listenership we need to cast a wide net and we'd be limited to a low power pirate broadcasting setup...though it does have a HUGE cool factor...

We could do and internet stream that goes from track to track, but have scheduled shows with dj's introducing tracks.

The thing about internet radio is you don’t actually need a DJ to introduce the tracks as the track title can be displayed on the listeners player.

And yes it is MUCH cheaper to run.

We could easily do it over out 8mb pipe. Although the upstream will be less than 8mb. OK, just looked it up. It’s only 400k. Will be pushing it if we get lots of listeners. Maybe we can talk to bulldog.

I say we strike out and aim to put together an initial pilot show just to suss out and flush out the technical realities.
If anyone cares to school me in this area I'm more than willing to make it my pet concern and emsure sixty minutes of broadcast quality radio is delivered on a weekly basis.
Concerning content, I see no sense in limitations of any set genre.
I see specialist music shows, community politics, drunken confessionals, local colour, sonic wibble, all kinds of ill shit.
I would be dead chuffed with a pirate operation but the internet does offer a global reach and I'm assuming woul be a hell of a lot less of a headache.
An online stream would be sweet but for the meantime have we got enough hostspace to hold an hour long MP3 available for direct download? (ideally these might be archived.)

I've fixed my dates and will be back in Edinburgh on the 27th.

Keep that frequency clear.

Free The Technics Two.

PS Thanks Tim for the prompt delivery of the recipes, everyone thought them a treat.

Bulldog couldn't organise streaming in a brewery, er, to mix metaphors.

You'd need to buy streaming bandwidth, possibly from a specialist:

I think you should look at the very serious penalties for all involved if you're caught broadcasting illegally. Sadly there isn't the relaxed approach to low-power broadcasts they have in the US.
If you wanted to do such a thing, you may want to do it: A. Somewhere else B. Without mentioning the Forest.

Well the first show planned will run in conjunction with the establishing of Forest Records.
This means it will only showcase artists under the Forest copyright.
But yeah, copyright is a cunt.
I think Urban75 Radio might be a model tp pursue.

i guess i'm missing something here on the internet streaming part of this... hasn't anyone clicked on the circle R next the What' On? section in the side bar? that's a streaming radio that plays anything we put into it. it would be nice to mix in some DJ commentary/forest talk into the mix.

we can do direct streams too like on http://cdbaby.com . those are just .m3u files that stream into a computers media player of choice. but its not as reliable as a flash player.

we also have the option of doing lo-fi streams thru the our radio... just needs to get smaller compressions of the mp3 files on our server. easy enough.

i like the idea of FM or MW broadcast. it's more analog and real to the city.

as for "An online stream would be sweet but for the meantime have we got enough hostspace to hold an hour long MP3 available for direct download?"

the radio currently has hours and hours and hours of music in it.

No, no you're not missing anything, your pace of development outstrips my attention to innumerable corners of this website.
I'll turn my focus to touting for future content
Print and distribute flyers tomorrow.

i really do like the idea of an actual radio show spinning the forest music collection with DJ talk and hype mixed in.
the musical content of the radio is rather hap-hazzrdly put into a single mixed playlist. so if anyone would like to know how to create your own playlists of forest music... ask away. we could use your help. its very easy.. just a text file that you can piece together in Word.
"sixty minutes of broadcast quality radio is delivered on a weekly basis"
is a great idea. hand me a recording, we can put it up.
specialist music shows, community politics, drunken confessionals, local colour, sonic wibble
also, it would be very cool to have a station dedicated to the rammbles of speakon word, comedy skits, Ryan and Nick's beautiful poetry reading!!!

we need to setup a the microphone system. record shows. get me some microphones or a budget for them. i stated in the equiptment section my suggestions on microphone budgets.

write a radio show... let's all get ripped, sit in the cave and have Forest Howard-Stern-night and broacast the craziness. there is so much room for fun and creativity with audio.
being that the radio also supports photos and animations and movies and hyperlinks and lyrics and downloads...think about how these things could enhance the audio experience.

action on this....
setup a recording-nite radio party
and yesyesyes
tout and
flyer and
print and distribute
