taxidermying animals

Post by Jane » Thu Mar 13, 2008 11:41 am

I'm sure that isn't the proper verb, but anyway.

Does anyone have an idea of what would be good to use to stuff animals in order to places them into poses (if one had hypothetically got their hands on a bunch of clean dead carcasses)? I don't think cotton wool is sturdy enough. It would be to make them able to stand up alone.

thanks
xx

Straw and horse hair might be good. You might need some wire too.

I like where this is going.

I'm sure there are lots of online how-to's, it's worth searching for yourself because all taxidermy sites are always amazing.
Also
you might wish to try and track down this documentary
Taxidermy: Stuff The World

I caught the last ten minutes or so, here's Charlie Brooker's opinion on it

Anyway, speaking of trophies and hunting and mounting and raw animal lust, lurking in the schedules this week is an absolutely magnificent documentary called Taxidermy: Stuff The World (Mon, 9pm, BBC2), which follows a disparate group of taxidermists in the run-up to the 2005 World Taxidermy Championships. On paper, it sounds like a throwaway quirk-fest. It isn't. It's far, far better than that.

By the end, you'll have been amused, enlightened, impressed, repulsed, stunned, infuriated and moved. Probably in that order. There's also a good chance you'll throw up, so consider yourself warned. Whatever happens, when the credits roll, you'll be on your knees praying that Roy burns in hell for eternity on account of what he's done.

And if you want to know who Roy is, or what the hell I'm talking about, you'll have to tune in and see for yourself. I strongly urge you to do so.

I'd imagine that horse hair is more like wool than sheepskin. But maybe I'm living in the Meatrix.

You can get good clean dead carcasses on ebay. I have a pretty comprehensive book on how to make taxidermy which I can loan you if you like. Also have you seen walter potter's anthromorphic tableaus? walter potter is the king taxidermist

That book of yours sounds a treat.
Didn't Damian Hirst try and buy up the whole of Potter's collection.
I got a chance to see it when it was still housed in Bodmin and it was a mighty good weird.

Are you familliar with Angela Singer, I used her art as images for events listings some time back.
Conversly she's a raging animal rights activist.
Her work is straight-up amazing.
