Edinburgh Zine Fair
Ok, I still have enthusiasm and time for making this happen. Anyone else interested in getting involved?
I propose the 26th and 27th of July so as to have alot of time to put together something good.
not sure what the best approach would be- ideally the event would be more than just a series of stalls selling zines etc. and there would be events, workshops and stuff at the time as well. Does anyone have any ideas for cool stuff to put on or want to run a zine workshop of some kind?
Perhaps the London Zine Fair goers could feedback elements of the fair they thought were good and elements that were crap?
I aim to get in touch with varied peoples in relation to this to gauge initial enthusiasm/interest then, see what email lists can be hijacked to send round a call for submissions or similar. Please give me details of people you think would like to be involved/would be good to involve.
What will be needed to host a decent zine fair? tables is the main thing i can think of which i imagine would require rental unless the forest has a secret stash. I also aim to put together a proposal for a forest grant once i have a better idea of costs.
thoughts anybody?

ok, so i've contacted some folk about this...
analogue want a stall but need to get cover for the shop.
Sandy Meets and Malcy duff are interested and a couple of others. Magda also said that she spoke to some people at Prestonpandemonium who were interested.
no reply form Word Power, AK press, 1 oclock gun or Embassy- perhaps if people who know the people involved contact them they would be more interested....
i;m workign on a flyer that should be ready soon...
Still not sure what to do about tables tho- can anyone think of any free alternatives to hirinbg? also how many tables do we aim to get?
also need more cool ideas for events etc- M\lcy Duf wants to do an image sound thing maybe...

I say Lets be ambitious and book out the whole hall for the zine fair and have the other shop stuff on another date.
I understand the reservations but i agree with martin, the event will be better without other concerns.
with a bit of energy, work and promotion it will be a quality event!
having said that poster still on its way, also i think project slogan are also in for a stall.

I haven't been in touch with Nine yet, so if you know her that would be good.
I will send a mail the way of Varient.
I could certainly agree to meet at some point if there is sufficient interest in meeting. Yes we need to get the publicity on the move i've been crap so far at getting this poster done- but soon, soon, i gots an image but need to add the text.
perhaps it would be an idea also to make a facebook group? and maybe <ahem>myspace</ahem>
Magda says she was speaking to dan about the possibility of the university settlement loaning us some tables for the event but it looks liek we would have to transport them from Livingston- have pmed Dan about this.

The guy who writes the reviews for Variant is a fantastic fellow named Mark Pawson.
His website can be found here
http://www.mpawson.demon.co.uk/
He's an obsessionist extraordinaire and one of my few heroes as he would always chuck in every manner of odd extras included with an order.
High weirdness by mail indeed.
Make sure the event gets added here

London - just one day.
Workshops - yes - London had some amazing ones listed.
Gig - would be good - I see Jeffrey Lewis has a big gap in his tour schedule.

AK Press are in. They are having a think on other folks who might want in.
Tried Elaine at Word Power. Should be in touch with her tomorrow.
Nine has a zine called 'If destroyed still true' and would like a stall. Is this cool? I think London was distros only, but we can open it up a little yes/no?
My friend Lucy has got boxes of stuff she has been trying to sort out for ages. She's aiming for the event and would like a stall.
Another friend Joey has a small distro. Still trying to get in touch with him.
I printed off 20 A4 posters and left a few in the cabinet in the action room.

I phoned steve of recycle scotland re: tables and left a message but he didn't get back to me yet. will phone back.
when do we need to pick them up by do you know? cos i'd imagine storage would be a problem seeing as the fair itself isn't for a month or so yet.
also, no budget arranged as of yet, was going to apply for a grant if it was necessary but if the tables are for free then we might not need much fuinding....

I went to see Elaine at Word Power yesterday. They're away the 25-26th but might give a box of stuff to AK on their behalf. Elaine will try to think of contacts, but doesn't know much about the zine scene and seems to think it's mainly southern based. Are we interested in the book binding workshop usually held at the radical bookfair? I could get a contact for that.
I talked to my friend Joey last night. He lives in Edinburgh and is starting a small distro. Unfortunately, he's out of town in July. He's gutted because he was thinking about coming us to pitch the idea of a zine symposium. But, he's going to send me a bunch of contacts.
He thinks a lot of the zine community from down south will come up for the event if given notice. The community is small and London is the only regular event in the UK. Plus, Forest is an awesome venue, which will encourage people to come. He will take posters to Brighton for us.
Ideas for workshops:
- screenprinting (will the room be ready?)
- 2 day zine project in the action room
- life drawing
- how to work a photocopier (sometimes surprisingly difficult...)
- radical history tour of Edinburgh
- films in the cafe or elsewhere

Do we still have the contact for the Irish folk who came two festivals ago?
They put together really sweet headphone audio tourguides for two people, had them off in separate ways and converge with different narratives.
Very charming and romantic it was.
If we don't have it - we should work on our own.

Are you going to email all individually Dai? I haven't been in touch with any of them. Joey knows the London organisers and may have contacts for peoples who couldn't be included because of space...if there were any?
Magda mentioned CrimeThinc today. Harry used to be part of the collective and might be able to be convinced to get some stuff sent over and work a stall. I'll get in touch with him.

ah, missed that post about about getting the web details on the poster. have already stuck some out and about.
getting a band and doing the workshops sounds ideal- bookbindin sounds like a good plan.
Films: i have a copy of comic book confidential, mentioned by dai above and also American Splendour which is a god movie. There is also The Psychedelic Mindscape of Alan Moore which i haven't seen but might be good.
Right so might be a good idea to meet up to discuss ideas fo r events- friday evening has been suggested, which is good for me, any time preferences?
