Crunchy burritos (not in a good way)

Post by swithun » Thu May 01, 2008 6:11 pm

Has anyone had a crunchy burrito recently? Ryan thought he'd had a few. I'm a nachos man myself, so I don't know. But perhaps some people are not cooking the rice properly. If you don't measure the rice with the proper small clear plastic measuring cup, then the rice can be over- (mushy) or under-cooked (crunchy).

If you use the proper measuring cup, then do 10 cups of rice and add water until the 10 cup line. If not using the correct cup, then measure equal amounts of rice and water.

for some reason the "equal ammounts" princilple doesn't seem to work if you use too much rice in that cooker. as it is weighted at the bottom (i think) and so yesterday I used 10 tea cups rice to 10 tea cups water and it took a while to work.

1) we need a proper measuring cup for our rice cookers (we had many for the years i worked in the kitchen, it seems to have been replaced by an orange half-pint cup which i threw against the wall yesterday in a post-beltane, this place if fucked-up, fury.)

2) there is a chance that the rice machine (digital) is fucked because it seemed to keep turning off but maybe i over filled it. should try it with 5 cups rice to 5 cups water and see what happens.

3) why has no KM noticed this?

I think overfilling is bad. I buggered my old rice cooker doing that I think - cooking rice and steaming corn on the cobs at the same time. I'll bring down my measuring cup.

Equal amounts works for me too. Maybe it was just too full. Very strange.

I have submitted to the cup when telling vollies how to do it. It also works. Meh.

I was making burritos last night. The rice, cooked in the digital cooker, was crunchy again. I think it's broken. It cooks the rice, but just not enough. The other rice cooker does rice perfectly, so it can't be a new type of heat resistant rice we've got.

Maybe that's why I'm not having problems? I use the 'other' cooker as my standard.

Yeah, the digital one seemed to be fucked but is now working fine again.

I have to say, every batch of rice I have done recently has been PERFECT! It helps to fluff it up with a fork once it's been cooked.

So, it's all better.

Rice cup works perfectly.
