Yes i agree it is a great idea to promote the program of events. This has proved difficult in the past for a couple of reasons-

- collating the images and text from the artists usually proves difficult.
-We do 2 week shows, which is unusual, so if we do 1 poster per show, it's too much work and is doomed to failure. Also, making a poster for 2 months worth of shows means the same poster is kicking around places for ages and becomes invisible.

I think that if we are promoting the shows themselves the posters should definitely contain images of the work and a short text describing it. Otherwise the artists we show will just be names that probably won't mean much to anyone.

It'd be good to have consistent postering in a few good spots that we update regularly, with the posters being eyecatching but with a unified visual style that identifies them.

Personally, i think that promoting the space itself is equally important though, we should design posters that describe the nature of the space and the application process, advertise for submissions, ideas for projects and potential new members.

So, I think we should decide:

-how often posters will be made
-new process for collating information
-List of places to hit
-list of details for electronic distribution

We also need:
-Template poster design so anybody can set up the new poster
-text for posters
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.

yes it has be difficult in the past , but with no difficulty ive been able to post the info contained in the first post . this is a start . so in part we have moved on a bit . get better info from the artist i think is a must . we are giving them an opportunity and in return we are asking for that . its not much !

getting this info is crux of everything , without it we cant do any promotion of the gallery . so ask the artist your are dealing with to give us a short bit of text and an image . and explain to them why its important to us .without it nobody knows !

Wheee! I'm on the bb!

I would happily have a go at a poster template - I can use a computer in the action room, or borrow a laptop from someone.
This is a good idea: if someone has time they can elaborate on the existing template, or if no one can be bothered, then at least there's something. I also like the idea of pinning them up in the same places each fortnight, as a good reference point for people, and also to get into some kind of promotional routine.

So if anyone wants to throw some words/images/specs my way, I can put something together if it's not being done already.

excellent!

The TK logo is in one of the threads above, it would be great if this could be included.

I am still chasing my artist for info at the moment, but will endeavour to chase with more frequency.

I think the posters should be monthly myself, what do others think?

Also, this could help to reduce the website frustration and workload, as if the poster image can be made regularly, it can be put wholesale onto the website in place of going through the usual process.

if we are wanting to promote shows in advance, we should be aiming to produce the next months poster (if it be monthly) after the beginning of the last show of the month and before the end of it.

i have no concerns about when it comes out . as long as it does . and yes posting it on the web site may be better . although it wont be as good for archiving . but at least informative . hopfully posting stuff on the web will get easier once the new web site is up and running . it should be a bit like facebook events .

a simple idea is to get one good image from the artist (not to much to ask) stick there name on it and a logo . boom! a poster is born . really the artist should be doing this themselves .

Yeah, good plan, would be good to be back in the programme.

If we are able to do a poster for each show that'd be better for the website i suppose but i think that amount of effort would be difficult to sustain...

also facebook- should a seperate profile be created? Maybe we could create a group rather than a profile? it'd be good to go back to promoting the closing parties. We also need to start promoting the working group meeting on here, facebook and forestspeaks.

So where do the posters go?

I think several should go in the eca, perhaps someone will be able to enlighten us as to where... We should definitely be pushing call for submissions there anyway.

also fruitmarket, collective, ingleby, stills, ootb, leith school, talbot rice...

i can do the posters in eca - you have to get them stamped by the student onion otherwise they get taken down...

am awaiting londons reply .i will hassel them more .

this is and has always been a problem . I guess being nice about it doesn't work . So maybe reminding the artist that its a privilege that they are having a show and it only by the work of volunteers that they are having a show and giving us what we request is part of deal . and by not doing it nobody knows about their show and in general the gallery . THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR US !

since we have so many shows it a lot of work for us to write stuff for them . unless someone wanted to do it . this could be done via the proposals if need be .

there may be another solution entirely.

one solution for the posters is to take a photo of the work once it is hung and then make a poster via it .

ultimately i think the artist should be doing this themselves and some have .

the danger is becoming an advertisement agency for artist . spending our time running about getting this stuff rather than creating some bigger .

here's the high res version of the file - can we print some at the forest? It is set up for A$ but if it starts cropping at the bottom we might have to print it at, say, 95% and centre it to give a bigger border....

HI guys,
what about making people to designate already in the APPLICATION for a show what one image they would like to use for promo/ poster, IF selected? People might be more responsive when applying... and that there needs to be this minimal info in order for us to be able to process the application... Its not much to ask. would streamline it for us...

Great looking poster template, that is. 60' lit... ah! Also, the telly one. Thats the one that is going to be cut, no? bunuel...

do rgb images print as colour ? even iof they are black and white . both posters here are rgb colour space .

i notice that the submission flyer was printing in colour , even tho its black and white so i changed it to grayscale . this saves us money . so it something to be aware of .

i think the way forward for good looking posters is glossy paper . like this

http://purelypaper.co.uk/product.php?pr ... 164&page=1

this should give the finnish of professionally done posters but in a small scale .

i just need to find suppler that sell a pack individually , i can get a4 at staples . so i may buy a pack for testing purposes. but we need a3 paper but not card .

another idea on the promo front about the lack of images . is just to use some other image . fish springs to mind , each poster with a different fish on it . this at least gets the habit going . dia used a similar strategie with the events listing .

the mailing list really needs some kind of text otherwise its just a bunch of names . not that interesting .

wow ! did you do the posters ? they look good . sweet . where did yo get the images ?

all we need is a a3 sized ones , also i would put Edinburgh on them as we will want get some to billy in glasgow .

it does make archiving the text difficult , when its on a jpeg . but it does cut down work . i dont know really . although i need the text for the mailing list , but i could just send the jpeg . which ill do .

also its hard to read the text on the images . you need to resize the image to the size you want it to be before uploading it . otherwise when it gets resized by the website its not so good . for instance if the image is being resized to 500x500 px on the page , then resize it in photoshop/gimp to that,

am sure we can get a good system going . idealy it would be nice to create an event like facebook , then have the poster available for download for everyone. hopefully when we get the new website this will become a lot easier.

we need to get have an action day , unfortunately am weekends until may . so maybe have one at night and sort some stuff relating this .

all good

martin

art complex

simone

art complex

leith school of art

mike b

eca

sculpture workshop ?

marmot

eca

feel free to add yourself if ive missed you .

haveing posters in the collective gallerywould be good , they have a nice foyer where people may seat .

idealy it would be good to hang them in groups of two , i can see hanging a poster every 2 weeks a bit much .

there also the no small matter of getting the poster to ourselves . so maybe someone can print them out . leave them in tk pidgin hole and collection can happen from there ,

practice makes terrific things happen ! in time we should get better at this and then the fun can really happen .

ideally it would be good to have the posters ready for the meeting . so i need a image for sarahs show and David Mueller . please remember the poster is a3 so the image has to be of a reasonable size . its also important though not always possible to have the closing party on them .

and yes it not good to have old posters up . i would think eca and the collective take them down when they are dead .

The attachment should be several emails down on the email i sent you. I will resend. Sarah's application can be found by using the yahoo search function or scrolling through the "correspondence" folder. I'll attach both images.

ive put all the current posters in the tk post box . please collect and distribute , if its the last one please photocopy more .ive also printed out lots of gallery leaflets , so if you are in please put them out . they are in the cupboard, in the viking box .

i was thinking should we make a wee holder for them and put it on the wall . they usually get scattered and look shit .
