floor sanding cafe yeahhhhh !!!!

Post by martinmckenna » Mon Jun 15, 2009 9:44 am

so.......................

the current plan is to sand the floor of the cafe before august , this would be i the first week of july . but unfortunately the week starts on a Wednesday . i propose that we start this on the sunday 5th july and finish on the 7th tuesday . this should give us plenty of time to do the job right .

the sanding is pretty quick but hard work . the varnishing is easy but a slow process .

is it a goer !

Hi, i'm preparing a list for the stuff we need for this ( and sourcing it) and wrote a little how-to just to run through in my mind how to do this and how long it might take realistically. Will get them to Tove.

This will be soooo good to do!!!!!

good news,
i just sourced pro quality high-traffic water based (!!) varnish
and found one outfit that sells it in bulk.
I think we are in business.
Its really fast drying ( 2-3 hours)

oh and renting the machines...
to rent on sunday means we have to pay for the whole weekend.
my suggestion is to rent the sanders on monday and tuesday and be strategic about it, and
varnish wednesday. thats our cheapest option.
could work..?

That'll be all.

Here's a check list and short run-through of the sanding, FYI.
Particularly, if you have not done it before and are wondering whatall is involved.

It's 5 min of reading and guaranteed HOURS of fun.

So the cafe is going to be closed those days, then?

If so, have we notified anyone who has an event booked?

This stuff we will be using is waterborne and ultrafast drying.
Recoating time is 2-3 hours,
and the varnish should be perfectly dry for the cafe to open by the morning 2nd of July.

Yeah,
technically we're closing cafe on sunday 28th at 7pm, clear up, take all the chairs and tables and things from the kitchen so we can do work on the monday.

Also there's going to be an action kitchen readjustment on the same days.
We need to do that now before the festival.
There's going to be a team doing things all together!

yeahhhhhhhhhh!

Ok, more details.
About the machine rental,

-the cheapest deal is with BASICALLY Tool Hire, they are in Dalkeith. ( £50 +VAT + the belts and paper we use, for 2 days /2 machines total. This is way cheaper than the other outfits in town)
Its no problem, I can drive, but I suggest that we rent 10am monday so that the machines are back 10am wednesday. (I will not be able to leave home before 9am wednesday)

This means that we can start sanding only about 10.30-11 am monday. So we can make sure the prep gets done.

( If there is somebody else to pick up the machines, then this is not an issue. The rental place opens 7.45 am)

-another thing. We can pay ( upon the return of the machine) by check, but they need a debit/credit card number to register in the beginning of the rental as a guarantee of return of the machinery. There will not be a charge on this card (i.e. they do NOT charge and then reimburse...). They just need it as a standard procedure. Any ideas ?

I put up some posters in the cafe for volunteers to sign up for these days, Mati said he would be volunteer coordinator, or maybe i just volunteered him now. we have a sink and worktop already, if any one has or sees any fridges sofas etc that would be good, should we also redo some paintwork. Also has any posted on the volunteer forum or public pages about this and how we might need some help. would be good to coordinate that before so we can tell people when to come to maximize effect use of time. maybe we could meet for 1 hour one day before to do some planning, lets make lists, brilliant and go through tools in the workshop, okay sory I'll stop, this is more to do with the kitchen refit, anyway lets coordinate, see ya soon

just some thoughts here,

painting might not be a good idea with the sanding, as the dust tends to stick to the paint as its drying... you will end up with a load of gunk. So monday, tuesday maybe to concentrate on the rest of the kitchen renovations.

also, the work in the kitchen has to cease on wednesday, because there is no way to get to the kitchen as the floor finish is wet/drying... The place will have to be shut completely, alas...

ok.
re. painting/sanding I posted this on FWG already but:
it'd be amazing to be able to reppaint the floor of the window seat area, maybe on varnishing day. hmmm... door frames... this is not essential, can be done another time without too much of a fuss, but good to minimise the disruption!

it should say on the tin how much its supposed to cover, and with this stuff we might be fine without slashing on extra layers, but just whats recommended, so it should last better than the stuff we used in the gallery ( and that was less than 5 l). but we should check on the tin and eyeball the space size, we still have time to order more if its borderline....

ok, this is getting URGENT, no responses to this yet...
We need somebody with a CARD NUMBER to go to pick up the machine with me monday morning. I will drive, but they need to register a card at the time of the rental for security reasons. There will not be a charge on this card.
No card, no rental... Anybody willing?

Mirja, in which case, you might as well pick me up at my flat, as I live closer to Longstone than The Forest.
