computer network issues - café to action room

Post by milk » Sat Jul 11, 2009 11:43 pm

the net in the action room is b0rken. this appeared to happen around the time of the refit(?) and it was thought the cable might be the issue. i've laid a new (orange) cat6 cable between the action room at café (where the router is). we've tried connecting it to both the hub and a box, but no joy on getting a dhcp address from the router or pinging to or from the jukebox laptop when it was hooked up directly to the cable. i redid the ends three times, gah, seems well done enough now. also, connecting the cable directly to the wireless router instead of the 5-port hub makes no difference. mike and i tried various things but nae joy.

very confused.

Did you try connecting the laptop up in the same way but with a different cable? If that works fine then it's the cable that's buggered.

Milk said he is bringing some of his testing gear in tomorrow night (tonight) and I will probably be around to lend a hand.

i tried pinging the printer using the jukebox lappy directly into the action room hub which worked, but the same didn't work in the café.

so it would seem to be the cable, yes? i [re]did the ends three times each (aaargh) when i put it in. doubting my crimping abilities, i tried to get one of the dorkbot peeps to redo it again for me a few hour ago but he just did one end and had to go but my head was imploding so the other end still needs doing.

can someone sure in their crimping knowledge please help? i'm going mental over this.

else, ideas?

This is fixed. We had to run a new cable through the ceiling. We used the longest one we had, which was only just long enough. It's still a bit exposed in the hall. Unfortunately, I will need to drill a hole through part of the pulpit thingy in order to be able to get the cable out of harm's way. I hope there are no objections to this as the alternative is to thread through a longer cable and nobody wants to do that as it was a major hassle to get this one through!

Neil - I have an adaptor you can stick on the end to extend the cable with another one.

I may be around on Sunday eve. What sorta time would you be in? Or could you leave it in a pigeon hole?

I get back on the train at about 21:15. The thing's at home, so could go back and get it and be back round 10. Or drop it in a pigeonhole on Monday.

Monday'll be fine. Let me know which hole. I'm not sure which ones there are these days.

Thanks Martin, I got the adaptor.

I'm afraid the new cable is still exposed in the hall. I couldn't do anything when I came in to sort it as I couldn't find a hammer, despite searching the workshop & elsewhere. (This represents a new low for our tool situation. While it's always been hard to find a screwdriver in forest, I've never had any bother finding a hammer!)

Also, I was expecting an extension cable from Martin rather than just an adaptor, so we'll need more networking cable for this job as I couldn't see anything useful in the action room. Plenty of cable, nothing that works and is long enough. If I can borrow a crimping tool and testing device, maybe I can whack something together from what's already there.

Anyone gonna lend me these tools?

Also, do we have a supply of RJ45s?

Bugger. We have to get this sorted ASAP as the hall is used for festival stuff soon.

Thanks to whoever fixed this. I came in today to do it, but already done. Now the switch in the action room is in a place where not all the computers can be attached. I brought a 2m & a 3m ethernet cable & left them in the admin office. Also in there is Martin's adaptor.

The switch could be moved closer to the computers (I didn't want to do that as people were using it), or maybe those cables I brought are enough to connect up the other computers. I didn't have time to check.

I've got two more 2m ethernet cables going spare, if these are any use.

On the subject of ethernet cables, is there (or does anyone have) a 10m+ one that I could use on Saturday to get a reliable connection in the hall for a satellite linkup to our Mann in Berlin? I'm assuming that there are plenty of holes in the wall between the Action room and the hall.
