festival 2009

Post by martinmckenna » Sun Oct 19, 2008 10:12 am

i had a meeting with leith from the edinburgh art festival and she give me some dates , so the festival is running from the 30th 0f july to the 6th of september .

late art night in which gallerys stay open late is the 27th august.

the deadline for submissions for the guide is the 2nd of march . this does not have be what is going to be in the guide . but what we are thinking of doing . deadline for our listing is around april ,

2nd of december we will get the forms for our subbmission proposal .

so things to think about , is what are we going to do for next festival . get proposal ready / and an image for the book .
the late night is interesting as it could be a one off event for us .

alos we need to find what are fringe dates . it went a bit dead after wards . i think profomance worked the best in fringe .

our first request for the gallery in august is........................
http://www.bootworkstheatre.co.uk/

bootworks where you sit in a black box for five minutes looking out of a series of small windows while the company perform all round the box. We thought it would be totally lovely if they could be in there and people could see this happening from off the street and come inside to see what's going on.

this would be for a week . some between the 17th and 29th .

what's the plan with the emails? you mean send a mail to all the artists and collate all the images into one image? or do you mean something else?

I have contacted most of the previous artists in regards to images for the archive already and on the most part, images were not available or there was no response. That said, it sounds like it could be a cool idea.

i thought it may be an idea , that people who have shown with us get a chance to be in the book . so we ask them to send a image . pretty simple . we could ask more people if you like . it doesn't have to be something that was shown in the gallery* ,
just an image.

do they have to be images from last year's festival programme or can they be from anything we've done here?

Hmmm

I'm sure i posted to this thread last week to see if anyone was looking into this yet. There must have been a malfunction.

here is what i sent last year:
i've filled in the form with a generic exhibition called "TotalKunst" running for the length of the festival, supported by the text:

"TotalKunst is an open access, artist led initiative run by the forest visual arts working group. The Forest is a non-profit charity organisation which offers artists and other creatives the chance to exhibit and develop their work through the provision of space and facilities.

TotalKunst will be holding various exhibitions and events throughout the Edinburgh Art Festival."

could do with a bit of sprucing up. I will go ahead and email this with the logo as supporting image unless anyone suggests improvements.

The bits that worry me from the form are:
1.Proposals should show an understanding of the needs of audiences, and suggest how the presentation and interpretation of work might engage new and existing audiences.

2.Proposals should address the practicalities of showing in Edinburgh in August. Proposals should have, where required, a venue, dates, permits and content confirmed on submission, or provide evidence in support of this.

and:
9 April
Pre-Festival gathering where participants will be invited to give an informal 3 minute presentation on their exhibition or event
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.

HI Guys, the Garry guy came tuesday to see the space. Brought some catalogues of the last work as well.
Just got a mail from him and he is keen to deliver the project, I will have it with me in the next meeting. We were talking about his show for one of the festival offerings, and i think it would be good, and particularly for the event in the night-time. He saw the space, I took him all around forest so he has a good sense of the space and flow now.
Now for the eif/festival info and pics, he has a lot of images, and we could use some of this? He is doing a project in france as well, showing work of 30 people, but here its a smaller group. He knows that we provide the space, he gets his own funding. He also knows edinburgh a bit so our location is a key for this project.
here is from his mail:

"As I recall our main aims were to create a collection of foodstuffs brought by a selection
of artist couriers, the contents of the suitcases to reflect their own cultural identities. So
far I am looking at artists with these ethnic backgrounds:

Armenian
Irish
Italian
Greek
Polish
Scottish
Vietnamese
- with more to be added

I can display some 2D related artworks on the walls of the gallery, perhaps with a 3D
piece on the floor and as we decided, a selection of the cases on the sill of the window.
There is also a very good video piece of slowed down footage by Pamela Furness that
I could include in perhaps the cafe or library area"

he knows about the issues with tech equipment so we can just see and plan all the details, what works and what does not. Also there are two other galleries that might be part of this project, in cambodia and in poland, so that would be nice.

Does it mean that all four slots have to be decided upon within the next week? Or can one show out of the four be presented as an example?

I finish work by 6 then have plans at 9, so I could probably squeeze it in, if Mike can't do it.

am I doing this presentation then? when and where, and what?

am i right in thinking that aisla lockhead's show starts the 29th now? or is that when she starts to put it up and the show starts the 31st?

next tuesday i shall paint the gallery so it looks gorgeous for the festival, if that is ok with everyone. i'll put the work safe and was thinking maybe we should go for a drink in the evening when you collect your work in celebration of great show. what thinketh you all? maybe we could make the festival logos that night too???

and finally, what are we doing about a poster/ fliers for the shows over the festival. i remember talk of doing just one poster with several images on it to make life easier for us. any takers? i am happy to help but not really wanting to take it on by myself...what a wimp!

cool, looking forward to closing party tonight

i was thinking it would be good to make sure that we got documentation of the festival this year, so if everyone could make sure they photograph the show they are responsible for that would be cool

I also took a couple of shots of Ailsa's show, and some of her opening that i think were nice, as I happened to be with my camera. I will be in town today trying to get stuff done before i fly so i can see if i can shoot Sommantico as well. The Suitcase Series Garry Hunter is a photographer so i think that one will be covered.
