shooting video of The Forest? (was 'hi there')

Post by JonKeyo » Mon Nov 09, 2009 1:31 pm

My name is John. I am 20yrs old guy from Czech Republic. I am here in Edinburgh until 29th November and i am going to have my first Café shift at wednesday morning. I just wanna say hi, and offer my skills, if theyre maybe needed. Examples included.

So my hobby no.1 is video production, i have full hd (1920x1080) Canon HF100 cam with me, and iam able to shoot some events or whatever and then edit it and produce it (vimeo hd, youtube hd, standalone h264 professionally encoded mp4 file or whatever) after 29th Nov. back at my home.

Videos:

http://vimeo.com/5726966 - somewhat moody short video in misty Olomouc
http://vimeo.com/5693873 - macro and my cat :D
http://vimeo.com/4118307 - some experimental trash :D
http://vimeo.com/2926083 - lot of cats, mixed with random things, just 1st demo footage :D

My older interest is graphics. I did a few websites. I like somewhat minimalistic simple style. Working with photoshop, notepad, html/css, pre-made php (at notebook here at Edin.). Ive also done some commercial graphics, logos, flyers. When i was a lot younger i did some fun things in photoshop with photos. Like manipulative retouches and so on.

hey John!

thanks very much for the offer of your services.

one thought I've had for a while is that it would be great to have a video tour of the forest - something that gets the whole scale of the building and facets of the organisation, something that records typical action happening in the main café area, front room, gallery, shop, meetings in the action room, workshops in the action and crafty rooms plus the hall, etc.

i don't know how much production work you'd be willing to do though. saying that, even just a good series dynamic captures and scenes from various happenings, such as the golden hour (including the crowd and atmosphere, not just the acts), or of the free shop events, gallery parties, Old Hat Book openings, etc, would be fantastic.

i think i understand you ... basically view on life of Forest ... to cover all interesting Forest places, some meetings, people, events, different day times maybe. Well i dont know how much of it i can cover, but i will try to film something. It will be good if you (or anybody) would make me some list of interesting (must on video) events, meetings ... theres free events / weekly program on the web but i dont know a thing about whats more important, interesting and suitable for filming it and whats not ... so basically list some key things of Forest (with date/time/place info) would be great.

ravanwin:
okay ... i will come ... i will film it ... and see how much footage would i need to have a interesting video of it / how much time to be there ... so not sure i will film it all though.

some misc thoughts;

the golden hour would be great for footage, both of performances and crowd in the café area, though it would also be nice to get in some shots of crowd in the front room and the gallery area and have some footage from during the day to contrast it with. footage of the outside, both day and night, would also be nice. the Old Hat Books collective do their thing on mondays, wednesdays and saturdays if i recall correctly, would be nice to include some of their action in it.

for the shop - i don't know what times are busiest so you can get some members of the public browsing stock included. maybe quick closeups of each area/kind of stock would be good too.

working group meetings and workshops in the action room - the visual arts working group will probably have at least a few folk turning up - it's on the 27th of november. the dorkbot alba group meet in the action room on every second tuesday evenings, check the website for their next gathering.

for workshops in the hall - the forest chior and drama groups are both in there on tuesday evenings. it would be nice to include them also, so if you get there at the start and ask the workshop leaders if it would be ok to shoot some quick footage of them in action. also maybe 'self-defence for beginners' which is on monday early afternoons and thursday evenings.

there are several workshops in the crafty room though i don't know what might be a good example for you to shoot - Fanny is our workshop coordinator at the moment - you could e-mail her at workshops [at] theforest.org.uk to ask. or you could just turn up to the individual advertised workshops and ask the coordinators for those there if it's ok.

the tools workshop, darkroom and cave could be shot also - you could ask in the appropriate BB forum to get access, or you can find their coordinator contact details in the Volunteer WG forum on the BB.

big events coming up in the hall - http://theforest.org.uk/event/solidarit ... aiser-rawa on the 14th and http://theforest.org.uk/event/roc-na-gaidhlig-2009 on the 28th could be good for footage.

in the café - the freeshop every sunday afternoon, the gramophone hour, just before the holden hour. also, maybe if you speak to one of the kitchen managers in the day, they can let you take some shots from behind the café counter if you'd like. or you can try get general shots from in the sound desk area?

if you'd like more info on any of this or whatever, please comment and i'll get back to you!

thanks again :)

John,

I run the dorkbot group that Milk mentioned. We meet twice a month in the forest to do strange things with electronics. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 24th. If you want to film that, let me know and I will make sure all our coolest stuff gets brought along - LED hats, flying drones, Tesla coils, a robotic organ... it would be really great to get some nice footage.

today i recorded some footage of Forest interier and few speeches ... i was wondering if

1). would it be possible to copy music from the PC in Café ... i heard that its somewhat free copywright ? ... (technical question ... isnt it Mac ? is it possible to mount on it NTFS formatted external HDD drive ?)

2). someone would be willing to say a few senteces about Forrest. (especially somewhat Forrest important people) ... i think it can be pretty much anything ... which is related to Forrest ... What it is, what do you like about it, how are you connected to it, what sort of thing happens here ... althought it would be better if there would be one somewhat more extensive/serious speech. (this friday, saturday ... in daylight active time, quiet enviroment) ... more people - better

to this moment i have:
shots of: Forrest from outside, front room cafe, total kunst room, some shots of cafe, kitchen, basement, upper floor balcony, forrest shop, piano, dorkbot alba (LED hat, flying helicopter, playing midi organ), some music performances from Golden Hour
speeches of: Martin (Dorkbot Alba), Stephen?, Jonathan?

Don't see why not, as long as you're not going to use it for blatantly commercial purposes.

It won't write to an NTFS formatted drive. There is a back-up of the music on our NTFS formatted USB drive which is in the admin office. You'll need to speak to Lynne to get access to it.

hi there again
well here is result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivUU5IsxTQc&fmt=22

i didnt tagged anything and so on, because i dont consider it final version ... theres color grading/correction missing, i also noticed one error in level of volume in one talk and so one ...
i will try to finish it soon ... and then upload it fully to youtube/vimeo and give a file for download (250MB mp4 file / 720p 25fps / H.264 at 4000 Kbps / AAC 48 at 192 Kbps)

Jon, this really is fantastic. It's great that it captures evidence of so many of the different things Forest does.

Are you planning to put in some of the footage from the Golden Hour that you shot too?

well i couldnt fit it anywhere ... i dont have much good footage from GH ... the clip of Rantum Scantum i posted earlier is pretty much everything good i have ... i just might someday do quick edit of that and maybe turn it to BW colors ... i think it would do a good job on that overburn reds ... so maybe later

here are final versions:
http://vimeo.com/8648569
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7Idz86LREE

i repaired audio rendering errors, color graded it with somewhat bronze less flat colors, corrected slightly brightneess/contrast ... well lot of things in small way ... i think it has now sort of more consistent feel

here are few things you may wanna backup somewhere ... download it, i might purge it in week or so

video files
2x 250MB, they are h264 at 4Mbps with AAC audio ... better quality than to download it youtube/vimeo encoded
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3358708/The_For ... ptimal.mp4 (final)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3358708/The_For ... ptimal.mp4 (orig colors)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3358708/screenshot1_720p.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3358708/screenshot1_1080p.jpg

i can also offer 1080p or 1080i version with 18Mbps (same as cam) which is about 1GB ... but considering majority of shots are in pretty low light conditions ... it isnt that much difference in detail from 720p ... just say so if you want it

Hey Jon, thanks for the second edit.

I'd really love to have the whole bit of footage you took of the organ too. It hasn't worked so well lately and I think that rendition of "Flight of the Bumblebee" you shot it playing was actually one of the best it ever did. It'd be great to have the whole thing for posterity.
