Cafe and events meeting 3rd december 2009

Present is: Julie, Hannah KM, Stephen NM, Milk, Maxime, Hannah EVS

P: Proposal
AP: Action Point

Agenda

New menu?
Till
When are we closed for Christmas?
Co op with language school?
Photos of barred people in vollie toilet
Julie - changed her project.
Photo of meals hanging in the kitchen
Recycling contract
Posters from brighton
Electrical equipment random people bring to Forest
Decibel - reading in the café (should we have a sound limit?
Café ventilation
Open sourceing the café recipies in the café
AP and follow ups from last minute

The meeting:

New menu?

Food and prices on one site, about the forest and volunteering.
P: The new menu needs following details:
one for the counter - informal,
One for the tables, funny version
Graphic: Vegan or vegetarion option icon.
Also, allergy advice
You can get involved and run by working groups. The Forest is NOT only a café.
We do NOT sell alcohol!
Drinks should be on the backside
Put pasties on the menu

Post it on the BB

AP: Maxime

Till
Tea should be 1 pound, not 99 p.
Corkage buttons should be updated
Pasties should be added

AP: Hannah EVS, ask Lynne or Stephen KM to do it.

When are we closed for Christmas?
To be confirmed by the forest WG.

Co-op with language school?
Hannah: An English teacher would like to arrange an exchange for 16-18 year olds.
Their age might be a problem? No, we have young vollies anyway.
P: we should only take one at the time. They shouldn’t be on the Rota
Discuss it at the next meeting when we have more info

AP: Hannah EVS

Photos of barred people in vollie toilet
AP: Milk
AP: Milk should add the EVS to the NM section on the BB

Julie - changed her project
Julie has changed her personal project. She is now working with the Tech Team and will attend the artist fascilities meetings more than the café and events. Ilaria is still working with events and promotion.

Photo of meals hanging in the kitchen?
Why? To standardise the meals so new vollies can make the meals in a correct way.
We already have descriptions of how to make the meals hanging in the kitchen. There is no need for photos.

Recycling contract
What is happening?
Milk posted something on the bb - A grant you could apply for as a small enterprise.

AP: Milk to get an update from Lynne or David. Can we start it now, or wait for a grant. And how much would it cost?

Posters from Brighton
Better wording of the Forest ethos.
P: we should have a poster with The ethos of The Forest written in a nice and funny way (not rude as now) like they do in brighton.

To start with… collate all posters about Forest

Hannah KM have some about food and hygiene.. she will send them to Milk

AP: Milk. Hannah EVS can help out

We need a database for all work done for the forest so that this does not get lost. A place to collate forest work.
Review the bb.

AP: Milk

Electrical equipment random people bring to Forest

Electricity is a problem at the forest…
It is impossible to check all computers everyone brings to the forest..

But we have permanent equipment and it should be checked.

The plugs in the café should be checked

The cave should be checked

AP: Milk will confirm with the FWG about electrical standard conformity.

Decibel in the café (should we have a sound limit?)

AP: Maxime will look into health and safety.
AP: Milk - what is the situation for money and buying stuff.. milk will ask FWG

Café ventilation
We need it.

AP: Hannah will follow this up

Open sourceing the café recipes in the café
For: sharing skills
Against: Forest is DIY, it is better to make people think outside the box.

We agree. We don’t see why not

AP: Milk will write the recipes

Falafel balls
Falafels at the forest are bad some people say.
Why don’t we make them ourselves? Because we need to deepfry them.. fire hazard, smell, etc. so no.
How about another supplier?

AP: Stephen NM will look into this.

Or get our supplier to bring them every day?

AP: Stephen will contact a KM

AP and follow ups from last meeting
- other suppliers of food in the café?
Bread: earthy can’t supply us.
Then who can?

AP: Stephen NM

- NM get a coupon for free meal and drink after their shift

the best falafel I've had so far in Edinburgh was in Al Dar (underneath Palmyras), might be worth asking them for a quote?

About the manu,
I have asked Marmot (as was decided on a Cafe and Eventsmeeting when marmot was still around)
to do a new menu.
So I think he is working on it, and he said that he is on it´s way making it.
Will remand(spells? like that, I don´t knw remind? anyway....) him again now.

Well I don't know if you want to wait for the other submission, but since there is no news here is my menu with some modifications.

Also what is the price for pastries and what are they made of?

I wanted to post the inkscape source file but the board doesn't accept svg files.

hey, new menu LOOKs really good. we've needed one for ages.

However - 2 things:

1) Also - isn't the mate Yerba?

2) i would say, one problem is that it is disturbingly not-funny.
if you want it made lighter. I can offer it to ForPub or CIA Nights to sort out.

Actually, here's new descriptions from AGES ago! I'm missing soup and salad and maybe some new ones. Let me know what needs describing / naming and i'll set the forpub crew a challenge!

Enjoy the below....

Daily Specials
Homemade at The Forest

Curry/Chilli with Rice (Vegan): £4.20
Imported via our minds from the authentic kitchens of old India or perhaps from the golden deserts of Mexico! Fast and easy (like a certain Mamma we used to know).

Hot and Wet Soup (Vegan): £2.50
Like yo mamma (used to make). See the board.

Freshly Spanked Wraps: £2.50
In the display fridge. Have a butchers'.

Main Meals

Burrito : £4.20
The Old Milky
Highland parents fear the legend of Old Milky who is known for enticing children away with his lactating goodies. He lays down a thick layer of refried beans, adds hot lashings of salsa, rice and red kidney beans. Designed to fatten up children, The Old Milky fills you up and slows you down. Available sans cheese for those who fear the legend's milky embrace. Note: A half-glass of full fat milk by your bed will keep Old Milky's ghost away no matter how much sticky cheese you consume.

(Vegan option available).

Nachos, dude (fancy a threesome?): £4.90
The Nicholas Cage
While The Cage would say nothing's better than his impeccable acting abilities (see Wicker Man for reference), our nachos give him a run for his money. The corn tortilla chips Leave Las Vegas, then they're covered in salsa that could Raise Arizona. Add some cheddar cheese and they could be Gone in 60 Seconds. Like their namesake, these nachos are truly a legend in their own time.

Falafel Meal (Vegan): £4.20
The Sexxxy Accident
We know why you look. It's hard for a meal of three giant Falafel balls to hide its sexiness, but it's no accident that ours are the sexiest in town. Get ready for some hot chickpea-on-chickpea action when we combine this amorous trio with our homemade hummus. At once a spicy and creamy bang, we'll even hook you up with some pitta bread prophylactics – Safety First, but don't wear your seatbelt.

Salad Plate: (Vegan) £4.20
The D.F.W.
3 (as in the basic numerical unit, also denoted by ‘III’ ‘three’, ‘iii’, or ‘㈢)’ (Arabic font unavailable on this computer)) Salads (erroneous use of the plural fully intended, it being never far from our mind that ‘salad’, being an uncountable noun, does not require (let alone deserve) to have the suffix- s atttached) with (as in ‘accompanied by’, and also (in this case, correctly) implying that the noun phrase anteceding the term is greater in quantity than that which follows it) Bread (used here non-colloquially i.e. “n. baked dough made from flour usu. leavened with yeast and moistened, eaten as a staple food” (OED) and certainly not implying that we slip some folding green under your flower petals).

Cheese and Beans on Toast: £2.00
The Godfather of Soul (Food).
Are you ready for star time? It's time to make it funky! It's time to get on up to juicy funky drummer beans and get on down to hotpants melted cheese! This is the hardest working meal in show business and was James Brown's last meal. At least he died happy. You can too for only 200 pence.
Beans on Toast (Vegan): £1.60
Cheese on Toast: £2.00

Falafel Burger (Vegan): £2.20
The Balls of Joy.
2 moist falafel balls sit proudly next to primed pitta with suggestive side salad and a healthy heave of hummus. A gay might have gaily touched this. Do not be alarmed!

munchfrenchmunchmenu

Olive Bowl with Two Warmer Pitta Breads (Vegan): £2.70
Or, as the French call it, Le Bowl du Olive. If the black olives were black and the green olives were white and the garlic cloves were Asian and the spices some other kind of ethnicity, like Native-American, then this dish would be a perfect example of racial integration and could receive funding from the E.U. marinaded in a harmonious homemade marinade.

Brie and Oatcakes: £2.80
aka 'The Pynchon'. Because within this, within all things, one find, at the edge of shadow, vectors, grid-lines, lost intentions, notions thought on stairs that wind, which separately, and in conjunction, leave the thinker, the word-eater, conscious, in the bitter dawn, of the ever-absence.

Tortilla Chips and Salsa (Vegan): £1.80
Delicate corn based, wheat free tortilla chips with a decadent side of spiced up salsa. It's the snack that just won't quit. Fresh!

Pitta with Hummus Dip (Vegan): £1.80
You can dip the hummus, spread the hummus, stuff the hummus. Lick then nibble the pitta. Wipe it on your face. Rub it “derriere les oreilles”. There are no boundaries here. Free tease for telling us how you eat yours.

Savoury Extras
The Freedom of Barabas
You asked for it, you got it. A whack of the following extras will be thrown in the direction of your plate. But where will it land?
Salsa/Cheese/Sour Cream/Hummus: 60p
Green/Fancy Salad: £1.00

Sweet Things

Cakes: £1.65
Flapjacks, round cakes with icing and people with good skin are vegan. Brownies and other sweets are not, but are, oh so delicious.

Fruit: £0.50
It's the sweet sugar of nature full of vitamins and now with added jazz. Our resident doctor recommends you eat your daily ration right now!

Thanks, changed in the source file.

True. Though we have to carefully weight how much stuff we want to add. A menu is foremost a functional item. Clients need to be able to sort through the menu to find the information they need quickly. I think it would be nice if we had a prosaic description of the meal, with a one line punch / joke to make it more memorable.

Also, some of the jokes / descriptions used now look like insides and are not easily intelligible to an outsider. Others are, imho, of dubious taste. The café is the most public facing part of the Forest, and also the bread winner of the whole thing. I think we should design the menu for the widest audience possible.

We can use both sides of the menu as it will be laminated so there could be more space for having whatever humerus statements we desire, collectively decided. I for one would miss the descriptions and would not be in favour of a menu with just plain descriptions. Appealing to as a wide an audience as possible is all well and good but does it not make everything quite bland. I know tove was in touch with matias, ex km, who said he would like to redo the menu, even though he is argentina, i thought this was the plan.

I am in disagreement with barred mugs in the volly toilets.

A book with pictures in it in the Night Managers Folder would be helpful, I think. A working Barred Cam would be nice.

i fear old milky.

menu looks awesome. obviously I am always in favour of cryptic lechy menu descriptions.

one thing I noticed - cider corkage is £1.20? Is this for massive ones? I kind of think the beer/cider should be less than a pint = 60p, more than a pint = £1.20 because bottles of, for example, williams bros ale are just over 500ml (568 I believe) but probably shouldn't be charged the same as the king sized ciders and san miguels.

Personally i think we should charge £3 for 3 litter bottles of cider, £1.20 wine, large beers and cider ( 600ml to 3 litters) and 60p for anything under 600ml.

Humorous menu descriptors are tres important. But so is readability...can CIA/ForPub be both witty and concise???

Also, what's the point of this salad plate malarky when there is only ever one fancy salad now?

okay -

ryan is on this.

Things to note for the designer - Normal Tea should always be known as: The Handsome Jack

Also, at the risk of using our menu "in memoriam" it may be nice to name something on the menu after our friend Ellie. The Maxwell? Not sure if this is a fitting tribute or in utterly bad taste but I kind of like the idea that we'll continue to honour our friends on the menu. Thoughts on this?

here's what I'm sourcing descriptions for:

If you fancy doing one or two - do say - I reckon people can just call what they want.

need new:

curry

soup

pasties

wraps

soup & salad combo

cheese and beans

Falafel Burger

Olive Bowl

chips and salsa

pitta with hummus dip

Good luck with it!

Hmm, dunno. It was a specifically appropriate thing for Jack because he'd always come in for a cup of tea.
