black out curtains for the hall!

Post by cornelia » Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:29 pm

The hall needs new blackout curtains as soon as possible and i was wondering if anyone is up for finding a company who can make them for us and also maybe apply for some grants so we can afford them
If anyone is up for taking this as a small project that would great!

here are the measures that gandolf took the other week:
3 windows:
6 metres high x 3.6 m wide
This is for a single curtain across the widest part of each opening and overlapping wall on sides, above and below.

1 window (mostly obscured by balcony):
top: 2m high (above balcony)
bottom: 2.3m high (below balcony)
This is for a single curtain across the widest part of each opening and overlapping wall on sides, above and below.

Note: If curtains are to be 2 pieces opening centrally there needs to be an additional overlap.

thanks a million if anyone is up for it!!

if they are fucked/gone maybe try calling round the theatre/queen margarets to see if they have old ones? These things get replaced really regularly in the industry...

Yes.

we cut corners.

did them on the cheap and they where shit.

We still have the material. Some of it is ripped. Some of it is now forming the Sound Enclosure that is there now.

We need proper ones. Ones that actually blackout. And that can be opened.

If we DIY it has to be proper and robust.

we can't skimp on these. they have got to be proper. That doesn't mean we can't find the cheap way.

This is now my mission. We will have curtains by July. We will.

they where shit.
sorry to James and Swith and all who helped on that project.

Chris, why not use aluminum?

open close in good/essential. big heavy curtains keep the draft out?

they still cost plenty, and it was special flame retardant fabric.

The problem was they were measured wrong. But, if we still have the material it can easily be reused through the power of sewing, and only a small amount of new fabric need be sourced!!

hurray! recycling! we can turn our old curtains into our new curtains!

here is a quote that i got from black lights, not too cheap :S £ 1,700 for new curtains + setting them up

Please find attached a quotation for your perusal for the drapes as requested.

Please let me know how you find this. The tracking we would suggest would be Unirail, this costs £24 per metre, plus you have the addition of attachments, such as runners and end stops. We could probably install this in a day for you, Our Labour cost would be roughly £500 ex Vat, plus access equipment etc.
Let me know how the costs sit within your budget and feel free to give me a call to discuss

Look forward to hearing from you in due course,

hmmm

can we not use old theatrical ones as last year? Could ask the theatres now for them? Although yes, it's cutting it a bit fine. Or ask Queen Margarets Uni for old ones?

I've been asking around among a few theatres, but it could be worth to make another phone round
but yeah anyone who has contacts at the roxy should ask them
time is running out so we should make the decision soon!

Problems solved!
Kim has provided us with fabric for Black out curtains
BUT, we need someone to do some patching with a sewing machine
so anyone who is a good seamstress/tailor and would be up for some
repairing fabric before thursday give me a shout!
It won't be a big job but really important though

cheers

has someone spoken to roxy about using their access tower? cos it's getting awfy late and they are likely to be using it and it could be hard to hire one right now. K x
