Proposal installation front room

Post by cornelia » Fri Jul 09, 2010 11:27 am

We met Katy Thompson at the degree show. We really liked her stuff and asked her to come and do something for the fringe. So here is her proposal for the front room back wall:
Proposal for the ‘Old Hat Books’ area of the Forest Café.

I propose to make an installation of curiosity-type boxes and book shelves for the wall above and surrounding the ‘old hat books’ seating area of the entrance café. The installation will be positioned up the wall with a canopy of hand-made aeroplanes and parachutes reaching across towards the book cabinet. the shelves and boxes will have a sprawl of spider plants, jars and houses, all of which will be fixed to the various surfaces.

The bulk of the installation will be created off-site, ready to be installed in its various parts when convenient.

All segments are able to be fire-proofed with spray for safety. I intend to make most of the installation relatively out of reach of the public so it creates an atmosphere and display but does not impose upon the actual seating space.
Idea for wall based detail of installation. The pictures already in existence on this wall I intend to use as part of the installation however all arranged differently. Some of the areas will still be functional as book shelves but also interacted with other objects.

Idea for canopy area of installation. (as separate drawing for clarity) The parachutes have Cowboys and Indians attached and the model aeroplanes will be made from pages of old books.

The piece over-all acts to tell the pre-quell to the story of ‘the battle’ that I exhibited at the Edinburgh College of Art Degree show this year. The pre-quell to this tells the story of the ancient war that waged between the Cowboys and Indians and how they came to eventually join arms after the militia waged war on both sides regardless of their feud. It follows the story of Eli the cowboy and George the Indian who came together over a breakfast of porridge and decided to join forces in the fight for their ancestral lands.

Katy Thomson Graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with BA Hons in Drawing and Painting.

that sounds awesome, nice that it will somewhat fit with the library theme. Can we make sure though that all the pictures that may get moved get kept cos we put a lot of time and gold paint into those!
rad. great proposal.
