Craftivism and Edinburgh World Justice Festival

Postby katymac » Wed Jun 25, 2014 8:23 pm

Hello knitters, sew-ers, cross-stitchers, printers, those who mend buttons (or would like to), experienced campaigners and newly politicised people with itchy fingers...

I'm going to propose an event on craftivism for the Edinburgh World Justice festival, which will be happening in October 2014. The event will most likely be on the 4th or 10th of October (Saturdays) - they are collecting submissions at the moment, so dates and times are still to be decided.

I hope we can bring together experienced activists and/or makers with those newly beginning, and to have materials and facilities to hand so people can experiment with craftivism on the day. I would like people to have the chance to see examples of craftivism from around the world, and share skills and ideas.

I would like to gather a group of people who would like to collaborate on planning this event - if you are interested in getting involved could you post below?

Thanks all x

Could we have an initial meeting for anyone interested - maybe Tuesday 29th July at 5pm? I'm night managing that night, so later is possible, but not too much.

Ok, seems like that was not a time that suited many people!

How about this: meeting called for Saturday 9th August at 2pm?

I contacted Sarah Corbett at Craftivist Collective when I was thinking about it (it was her interview on Culture Laser that made me think of doing the event and it would have been great to have her), but her fee for a talk is a lot of money for us, so we decided we would have to go ahead without.

This went really well, great contributions from everyone over two really peacefully productive days. There's now an exhibition in the cafe until the end of October, some photos are up at the Forest Flickr account: https://www.flickr.com/groups/forestcafe/ and plans are forming for a group to keep going. More soon...
