Music to my ears ( but don't own )

Postby Danny » Tue Apr 19, 2005 2:50 am

BELTAINE DJ

I'd love to have a cd of the Beltaine crowd's latest DJ mix. He played along to a wildlife film on Tuesday. It was a really warm, bouncy, slightly trippy, slightly cheeky, but defintately fluffy soundtrack. My mate Brian Random and me couldn't help but want to dance around daftly to it. Looked like Rowina and Laura were feeling it too. I want to making music that feels like that too!
Ninja Tune Label do stuff that has that feel too.

IVOR CUTLER " LUDO " ALBUM

A now ageing surrealist poet who the Beatles sited as a major influence. This is some mad stuff that he did with music. One of the chorus's goes " Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy, Joy, Punch " :) :)
It's kind of insanely funny in places and ... well just a little strange in others..
If I knew I had the cash I would buy this one. Wish I could afford new c.d.'s..

AIR

First Album was a classic. Second one good too.

MODERN REGGAE

I heard some stuff played by a DJ at the Bongo club's Sunday " Littlest Hobo " Evening. The singer had a great London vibe about him, It's about time we heard more of this sort of thing, music with a vibe we can relate to. Your classic reggae/dancehall sound feels kinda tired too me sometimes...

MODERN HIP-HOP

My friends Sasha and Chism tell me Beanieman ( Glasweigan Rapper ), is worth checking out.

AMBIENT SOUNDS

Yup. Something I want but can't afford.

What was amazing about the Album dude?

I have nill money for music really, so I try to be certain that I really like something before i buy it. There is only so much you can tell about a piece of music without hearing it, but if you can describe what it does for you a bit better, there's an outside possibility that you might convince me...

Dear god, Matthew... the Clientele are so beautiful... nobody seems to know about them though.

Yes, so I put them at the top of my list of the week as well:

From the UK:
The Clientele - especially Lost Weekend EP, The Violet Hour
I Am Kloot - Mancunian wit
The Tears - FUCKING SUEDE REUNITED (almost) ... saw them in Newcastle *drool*
Patrick Wolf - lost gypsy boy
Piano Magic - Vashti Bunyan guested on their recent Saint Marie EP

From the US:
The Mars Volta - chaos
Beck - Guero - hahahah new album is soooo LA
Entrance - one man blooze army, friend of my homeboy Devendra Banhart
Antony & the Johnsons - personal friend of Lou Reed's, charming... also Dev's friend

From Singapore:
The Observatory - very soulful, opened for Tortoise
Aspidistra Fly - beautiful sound washes, similar to Cocteau Twins, Slowdive

From Iceland:
Mugison - i'm saaaaad as a TRUCK
Múm - *sigh* .... *sigh*

From elsewhere:
Fela Kuti - Afrobeat God
Yann Tiersen - God of Waltz

and arbitrarily separated from the rest, i give you

Folksy stuff:
Faun Fables - dark, unique, childlike
*Dick* Gaughan - classic Edinburgh (oh my, looks as if there's a filter that turns the word D I C K into 'chris' ?!)
Sandy Denny - siren
Fairport Convention - best folk collective ever
Tim Buckley - self titled album really haunting me right now

Let me know if anyone wants to hear stuff from this list!

my cd collection was destroyed by the forest cupboard. i would like to come and take, take, take. the giving: it may be a little scratched and scarce.

but ...i will pack super girl romantic boys. and some other secret treats. although i don't have laptop technology there is little in life as joyous as overenthusiastic record swapping geekiness, and there will be mixtapes for anyone who copies me albums.

Sons and Daughters

Loved them live last year at Truck festival and finally got round to getting hold of the LP. It's great, go listen. Pretty girls and cool boys with exciting voices and pleasing guitars.

Oh, and also finally bought my first Echo and the Bunnymen. Porcupine. Very much suits my current (stylish) melancholy. If you're not a dull (and hey, while I'm about it, probably stupid too) happy person it might very much suit you too.

High time this thread was revived, despite the acts of idiot culture mess forum fascists mashing the Peoples' Forum into one long section.

Anyway,

Japan - Gentlemen Take Polaroids

Amazing occasionally vocal, lots of instrumental electronica, with a dash of new romantic elegance from the early eighties, in an oh my god, this is 25 years old, it's all been done better before type fashion. Heard Night Porter on Radio 6 and immediately tracked it down to here. Go go go.

Best found on amazon second hand dealers, or Soulseek.

This will make your life better.

Metronomy - Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe)

Clever, catchy, gritty electro pop. Like a more upbeat Dan Seizure. Listen to One String Strung first.

Pluxus

Swedish guys playing amazing video-gamey music

Polysics

another electronica band. Very energetic and funny and punky. Their song I, My, Me, Mine is awesome and has the best video, with a little girl dancing like a robot.

You know all anyone really needs is 1978 through 1983.

Maybe push 84 so we can have Hatful of Hollow.

Anyway, Gang of Four. Post Punk (but still quite punk) joy.

In particular, Return the Gift.

PHELAN SHEPPARD - HARPS OLD MASTER (BAY46CD)

the other project by the two main guys from STATE RIVER WIDENING. this is totally beatiful autumnal new-age post-folk ambient. give it a listen.
i waited so long for this album: my brother finally bought it on my request and gave it to a friend who was coming to visit. apparently the Leaf Label have no distribution in germany.

i'm on the "bru" part of my a - z of mp3 year.

so, it's been springsteen all week. a few gems like the syracuse show from 1995 where bruce tells all the kids in the audience "cunnilingis... that's latin for 'it's nice to keep your room clean'"

Of course, this was for his intro to Red Headed Women... one of the greatest songs about going down on a lady. (any others? swithun, you must know one or two?)

Also, i got to hear a nice version of bruce doing Hunka Hunka Burning Love at some Elvis convention.

Next Up: BUSTA

I thought long and hard about this, but can only come up with a couple.

Rolling Stones' Brown Sugar - how come you taste so good, just like a young girl should.

Rammstein's Kuss mich - sie beisst sich in jeder Zunge fest/weil sie gern lecken laesst/doch weil es etwas bitter schmeckt/wird sie seltsam nur gekuesst.

Autopilot's 'Devil went down on Betty' (mashup of Devil went down to Georgia and Black Betty) and Gainsbourg's '69 Anne Erotique' don't really count. And I don't think 'Everybody Was Tongue-Fu Fighting' and 'Another One Bites the Muff' actually exist.

And the less said about The Yeastie Girls 'You suck' the better.

Spent the last week transforming the daiPOD into a month-long mixtape ahead of the big travel trip.
Best of the new additions
Panda Bear Person Pitch.
It sounds like the Beach Boys playing in the room down the corridor but the room down the corridor actually exists in the sixties.
I can't wrap my head around it
Imagine having a 1 inch Brian Wilson trapped in a miniature musical box, with his own tiny sandpit, writing Smile and as happy as a clam.
It comes with minimalist precision painstaking applied in order to make a cluttered but beautifully arranged mosaic.
One for the headphones.
Pop fact: Brian Wilson only ever took acid twice, I think the damage stems from when his dad made him take a shit on the kitchen floor.

See you in June
Look out for
Club 33-45 Mixtape Night:'Planet Of The Tapes'
and
'Genderfuck II - The Boys Are Back In Gowns'

oh and i noticed back there in March that you were talking about songs about going down on girls.
I can think of:
All My Life- by the Foo Fighters lyric examples: "If I get any closer, i
And if you open up wide
And if you let me inside
On and on, Ive got nuthin to hide
" or
"Hey, dont let it go to waste
I love it but, I hate that taste
"

and possibly Hakuna Matata from the Lion King
"And, oh, the shame
Thought-a changin' my name
And I got downhearted
Ev'rytime that I...go down on a girl (i may have added that bit but pretty sure thats what they sang)
[Timon:] Hey, not in front of the Kids
[Pumba:] Oh, sorry.
[Both:] Hakuna Matata!"

My boss at work is thinking through his collection of thousands of Punk and rock Lp's form the 60's and 70's so i'm sure he'll get back to me with some obscure things...I'll keep you posted.
It's like God's vagina!

Still listening to the Panda Bear album.
It soothes me so.

Jane's Addiction mainman Perry Farrel, has a new album just out.
I'll follow him and forgive him the same way some folk allow for Bowie.

They have similar latter-day trajectories, dodgy daliances with d'n'b, misguided collaborative alliances.

It holds intrigue as he's hooked up with one Nuno Bettencourt
ex-plank-spanker of Extreme.

The two would have book-ended my spectrum of tolerance with the music of the late eighties.

Unconditional love can only serve to hurt.

but i have racked up
the high llamas
once when I wrote reviews
a review for an earlier album
i got them muddled
with the Llama Farmers
my review was rare and glowing
but i turned it in with the wrong band name
of course
no one picked up on the error
editor or reader
the whole episode humbled and depressed me
i lost the album to an ex-girlfriend
anyway i will listen to the downloads
and add my two honest two cents
to give the thread some dynamic
so look out
especially arthur russell
first thought best thought
i've d/loaded on beat references alone
