lamp shades for softies

Nick and I want to run a workshop to crochet lampshades for the forest with funding from FOH for cheap yarn. They may be very large and showy. Whadyall think? Fire safety issues?

I like it. I'm so bored of the current lampshades.

Can they be engineered so all flammable parts stay a good distance from any electrics? How about fire-proof yarn? Does that exist?

i just put in two new lights in the front room (it was too dark during the day)

i made a new lampshade for one of them (it is actually issue 99 of cia nights!).

so currently there are 2 lamps that definetely need shades (one front and one back).

Plus shades could be changed for one we already have...

plus the kitchen lamp shades are very boring.

i suggest changing the boring kitchen ones to all new crochet style (or? making them crazy covers and using those large dome shades as bases to give support to the crochet hat shades????)

making lampshades is quite tricky to get right, the current ones are cool (i didnt make them, but i fixed some after they got old) and it is a good style.

any how it is a FOH issue... for us to decide..

can you provide a sample?

I've never made anybut have done hats for friends... e.g. a top hat and a fez. Here's an example of a simple one:

but you can be more adventurous and any contour/pattern is possible. They can be pannelled rather than perfectly circular, globular, have larger gaps, stripes, tassels, suggestive shapes, etc.

It's nice to have the light coming through them so I don't know about using them tea-cosy-wise over the kitchen incumbents.

Somehow wooly lampshades is a paradox in my head. There's Neil's point about the fire hazard and also, do you think they'll let much light through?maybe loose weave would be good; lacey even...

Do you fancy having a crochet meeting on Mon 12th from about 18:00? It's the next time I'm 96% sure I'm gonna be free. Maybe just to make things for the Forest rather than teach at the moment, though I'll need guidance to make something other than scarves and tear sleeves.

You gotta see the scarf I'm crocheting my mum. She's gonna LOVE IT!!!
