Argyle free communist factory

Post by richard » Tue Sep 18, 2012 3:07 pm

Some of us have been discussing setting up a second plantation of the forest in Edinburgh devoted to open-access workshops. I mean real workshops: not flip-charts and powerpoint, but places where you hammer stuff, build stuff, weld stuff, etc. At Bristo we had the cave and the darkroom. At the new place we would have that and much more: workshops for wood and metal, engineering, textiles, ceramics, printing, bookbinding, whatever. There are already many such places in Germany. You pay a small fee by the hour and you can use the workspace and tools to do whatever you like. There are people around who know what they are doing and can help you. There are courses to teach you the basics and more advanced techniques. Who would be interested in such a thing? We're not sure, but we may be able to do this at Argyle. Let's get some discussion going here and fix a meeting at Tollcross Forest.

This something that really needs to happen, I'll help out in any way I can, and be using the thing extensively.

I'm also quite excited about the idea. Is there a date for a meeting about this? I guess it would be necessary to figure out what exists in Edinburgh already (Hacklab etc.) to avoid duplicating facilities.

Things are moving fast with Argyle now, so a good time to hop on board. May be best to email Stevie (plastickfork1@gmail.com) and Miija (mk@ergodic.org.uk) directly, as they're managing it.

Thing is at the moment we need people to help build the resources, it is just an empty shell, we have some equipment.

It will ve a while before there ua anything approaching a wood workshop or a welding room. To start bathrooms, music rehersal and kitchen things with studios for artists.

If people want studio space, rehersal/meeting rooms or to help building the resources contact membership@dss.theforest.org.uk

All I need is a room, I can get everything else I need, which isn't much.
